Are Caturra and Catuai coffee beans both Arabica? What are the differences in flavor characteristics between the two?

2026.10.20 FrontStreet Coffee 827
"Cadura" and "Caduai" are two varieties of Arabica. They may not be as famous as Typica, Bourbon, Geisha and other varieties, but they are popular fried chicken that most coffee farmers are rushing to grow.
Whether it is large estates like Jade and Alida, or other small producing areas, you can almost see these two beans. Not to mention other things, nearly one-third of the products on the Guangqian Street bean list are composed by these two brothers. It is enough to show that they are all characters that cannot be underestimated.

So today Front Street will share with you what kind of charm these two varieties, Cardura and Carduai, have that make coffee farmers crazy about them!

Caturra
Caturra was discovered between 1915 and 18In a coffee plantation in Minas Gerais, Brazil, it is a genetic mutation of Bourbon. Due to a genetic mutation, the plant will be much smaller than other bourbon plants. As the size difference between it and the surrounding plants became larger and larger, it didn't take long for people to discover the mutation.
Because of its small size, the locals named this new species "Caturra". In Guaraní, Caturra means "little". In addition, it also has the alias "Nanico". And it is precisely because of its small size that Caturra has an absolute advantage, so that it later became an inseparable coffee giant in Central and South America! Especially in Colombia, nearly half of the country's production originates from Caturra.

The advantages that make Kadula a "giant" may be more "vulgar" than everyone thinks. Although the flavor is excellent, it is secondary.(Yes, but small), the main reason is that the yield is high and it is easy to grow! Due to the small size of the plants, Catura can be planted at a higher density than other varieties in the same field. Higher density means higher production capacity, and the output will naturally increase accordingly.
At the same time, the secondary branches of Kaduura are closely spaced, which means that in the same space, Kaduura can bear more fruits.(Kadula’s branches are often broken due to this). With higher planting density and closer fruiting intervals, the yield of Caturra will be greater than that of conventional varieties. So this has become the reason why many coffee farmers are willing to plant it! Compared with the taste of coffee, for most coffee farmers, yield is more important.

图片

Let’s talk about Kadura’s “good seeds”! As we all know, most Arabica species are "delicate". They are not sun-resistant and are more suitable for planting in a shaded environment.
Kadula is different! It can withstand the sun's rays and can thrive and bear fruit even if its entire body is exposed to the sun. Therefore, Caturra can be grown in more places than most other Arabica species. And because of this, coffee like Caturra that can withstand direct sunlight has a unique name - "exposure coffee"(Sun Coffee)。

卡杜拉咖啡果

Combining the above two points, plus Caturra itself has a good flavor, Caturra has become a variety that most coffee farmers are happy to grow, and it is one of the main planting varieties in Central American production areas.Because of this, it is often used as a "benchmark" for testing new varieties. Its only disadvantage is that it has weak disease resistance and is more susceptible to disease and wilt. It is worth mentioning that, like Bourbon, Caturra comes in a variety of colors, including "red", "yellow" and "purple".
Just over ten years after Caturra was discovered,São Paulo State Agricultural Research Institute in Campinas(Instituto Agronômico, referred to as IAC)In order to obtain better quality coffee varieties, cross-breeding of coffee varieties was started, and Caturra was one of the main experimental subjects in the work. In the end, after several years of research and experimentation, an ideal series of varieties was finally bred. And it is the other protagonist I want to share in this article - Kaduai.

Catuai
Kaduai is composed of Kadua and the New WorldThe hybrid variety was released in Brazil in 1972.(New World Mundo Novo,The New World is the result of a natural cross between two ancient varieties, Bourbon and Typica. It was first discovered in 1943 in Titeminiros, Sao Paulo, Brazil. )Initially this variety was numbered "H-2077", and later people named it "Catuai". In Guaraní, Catuai means "very good". And this is indeed the case.
As a second-generation hybrid, Kaduai not only inherits Kaduai’s small size, high yield, and ability to withstand sun exposure, but also has relatively higher disease resistance. So when Carduai was released in Brazil, it was immediately widely planted there and became one of the main local varieties.

图片

Later, Carduai spread from Brazil to other places, and related plantings were found in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama and other places. For example, the sun-dried beans from Front Street Alida Estate in the Front Street beans list are from the Kaduai variety. Similarly, Kaduai is also divided into "red" and "yellow" ~

How does Kaduura and Kaduai taste?
Both varieties have good flavor performance, but they both have certain requirements for the altitude where they are grown. When planted at a lower altitude, their flavor will be slightly inferior to other Arabica varieties grown at the same altitude. However, when planted at a higher altitude, their flavor will be perfectly displayed and better than most varieties.

图片

Therefore, the flavors measured by the Front Street cup test are good, and the Kaduura and Kaduai selected for the bean list are both grown at relatively high altitudes. For example, Front Street Alida Manor·Kaduai, Front Street Ration Colombia·Cylan(Kadula), Front Street Emerald Manor·Diamond Head and so on. Among them, Front Street is very fond of the Diamond Hill of Emerald Manor. It is a blend of Cardura and Carduai. It has a very soft acidity and a slightly fermented aroma of sun exposure.
