How did Oiran Coffee get its name?
Oiran coffee literally means a coffee bean full of floral aroma, but in fact it is not. The flower aroma of Oiran is not strong, but the fruit aroma is stronger, such as passion fruit, strawberry, mango, jackfruit, and citrus. According to Front Street, the original name of Oiran coffee beans is Hambella, and the name Oiran was named by domestic coffee beans merchants. In February 2017, a sun-dried coffee produced at the Buku Abel Estate in Hambera won the Ethiopian Green Bean Competition. Because it breaks Geisha’s monopoly in the brewing competition and becomes the only single-origin coffee that can compete with it.
We know that Oiran coffee comes from Ethiopia, and Ethiopia is the origin of coffee and has a wide variety of coffee varieties. On the other hand, the Ethiopian government is unwilling to disclose information on native coffee tree species in order to protect it. Therefore, many Ethiopian coffee varieties are written as local native species, and the variety of Oiran is the local native species.
Front Street suddenly remembered that during the oiran's peak period, rumors often circulated on the Internet that the oiran was the top Gesha! AndThe reason why this "statement" spread is related to Geisha's other name - "Geisha".
"Geisha" - another name for Gesha in China
In 1931, Geisha was discovered in a forest in Ethiopia, but at this time Geisha did not cause any waves. It was not until 2004, 73 years later, that the Emerald Manor in Panama used Geisha species obtained from Costa Rica and won the BOP competition in one fell swoop, and Geisha became known to the world! Therefore, in the following time, Geisha has almost become a must-have "winner's bean" for major estates and major players in competitions.
Since Geisha is the same word as "geisha" in English, Taiwanese compatriots directly translate Geisha in English and call it geisha. But later people discovered that Geisha has a double meaning in Ethiopia. One refers to a specific area in southwestern Ethiopia, and the other refers to the coffee species in this specific area. Therefore, Geisha does not mean geisha directly translated into English.
Therefore, in 2006, when Mr. Yuan of Calum Coffee imported Geisha from Panama to mainland China for the first time, he named it "Gesha".
The most popular one for many years - "Oiran"
In 2017, the Buku Abel processing plant in Hambera, the Guji sub-producing area of Ethiopia, won the TOH championship with a sun-treated native coffee bean! It has a rich strawberry flavor, high sweetness, and a smooth creamy texture. This bean is the oiran!
After winning the championship, the green beans from the championship batch were introduced by green bean traders in Beijing. Then, in the World Brewing Competition of the same year, Li Jianfei, the runner-up in China, used this bean to overcome many obstacles and defeat many Geishas, winning the runner-up spot.
That's it, this one comes fromBuku AbelThe sun-dried beans from the processing plant also made a smooth debut with the popularity of the competition stage. In addition, the price is affordable, and it soon became a high-quality coffee widely recognized by people in the industry. This is also the reason why Front Street Oiran coffee beans are so popular. When Oiran is updated for the new production season every year, Front Street always launches it on the shelves in the shortest possible time.

The reason why this sun-dried native species is named Oiran is because it means that it can defeat Geisha and become the top existence among beans! Then, through the spread of the Internet, this sentence changed from "Oiran wants to defeat Gesha and become the top class" to "Oiran's coffee beans are the top Gesha". It is really dumbfounding~
Finally: Is there a flavor difference between Geisha/Gesha coffee beans and Oiran coffee beans?
Through cupping, Front Street found that Geisha coffee beans grown at high altitudes, no matter which processing method is used, always show charming floral aroma, bright citrus acidity and oolong/Tieguanyin tea flavor; while Oiran coffee beans are a native Ethiopian variety that is sun-dried. The method adds a sense of fermentation and sweetness to the coffee beans, while retaining the rich floral and fruity aroma of the native varieties while adding a full sweetness. The Oiran coffee tastes like a berry/tropical fruit aroma and sweet and sour juice, and the aftertaste is like oolong tea.
Geisha is the Gesha coffee variety, and Oiran is Ethiopian. There is definitely a difference in flavor among native varieties. As a crop, the flavor of coffee will change slightly every year due to changes in climate and soil/processing methods in the production area. Although there are changes, the main flavor of the variety is still retained.
