The arrival of autumn makes the sultry weather cooler, but many friends in the south can still feel the enthusiasm of Uncle Sun at noon. Drinking Pour over(V60) coffee in this dry season often makes your throat feel dry. At this time, ice-cold cold brew coffee has become everyone's favorite. Some friends will ask about the ratio of powder to water in making cold brew coffee and recommend coffee beans suitable for cold brew coffee~arrange! In this article, let’s talk about some tips on making cold brew coffee!

What is cold brew coffee?
Cold brew coffee is brewed at a low temperature for a long time. Due to low-temperature extraction, the bitter flavor substances in the coffee powder are difficult to extract. At the same time, the sweet and sour substances will be completely released after long-term soaking, which makes the coffee rich in aroma, full of sour and sweet, and smooth and mellow taste.
The ratio of powder to water for making cold brew coffee
Front Street usually recommends a powder-to-water ratio of 1:13 for cold brew coffee, so that the cold brew coffee has just the right concentration and can be tasted directly without dilution. Some friends also like to add milk/soda water or use it to make fancy coffee. In this case, they need to increase the concentration of coffee. Front Street recommends that the ratio of cold brew coffee used to make special coffee is 1:10.

How to make cold brew coffee?
Taking the powder-to-water ratio as 1:13 as an example, Front Street uses 30g of coffee beans, and the pass rate of a standard sieve with a grinding thickness of 0.85mm is about 80-85% (medium-fine grinding). "What should be noted here is that although low-temperature extraction can reduce the appearance of bitter substances, it is not 100%. If the grinding is too fine, the sweet and sour substances in the coffee powder will be quickly extracted, and the mellow substances will be released. An appropriate amount of mellow substances can increase the body of the coffee, but if it is soaked for a long time, a woody taste will begin to appear, reducing the overall cleanliness of the coffee."

After grinding the coffee beans, put them into a clean and oil-free sealed container, add 150g ice cubes and 240ml purified water, cover the lid and shake gently to ensure that the coffee powder and ice water are fully in contact, then put it in the refrigerator to rest for 12-24 hours. After extraction, use filter paper or fine mesh to filter out the coffee grounds before drinking.
How long can cold brew coffee be kept after filtering?
Theoretically, the longer the cold brew coffee is left, the stronger the fermentation flavor will be. However, over-fermentation causes coffee to lose its original flavor. For those who don’t like too strong fermentation smell, Front Street does not recommend trying it easily. The best tasting time for cold brew coffee is 2-3 days after filtering the coffee grounds, and the storage time is recommended to be no more than 7 days.

Recommended coffee beans suitable for making cold brew coffee
Since low-temperature extraction is difficult to extract mellow substances, cold-brew coffee made from medium-dark roasted coffee beans may be thin and lack solidity and body. Therefore, Front Street recommends that you use medium light/medium roasted coffee beans, coffee beans with outstanding sourness and sweetness or outstanding aroma.
