The emergence of Pour over(V60) coffee was originally to make coffee making easier. With the changes of the times and the improvement of the quality of life, everyone is enjoying the process of making Pour over(V60) coffee more and more, and there is more research and pursuit. Research is constantly innovating, and everyone is constantly pursuing it, so that many misunderstandings have appeared and many friends have fallen into it.

If you want to make delicious coffee, you must naturally have good beans. The biggest taboo for novices is to spend a lot of money but not be able to brew the flavor, so the best way is to buy delicious and inexpensive beans. For example, Front Street Yirgacheffe fruit dices, Front Street Oiran, and Front Street Kenya cherry tomatoes are the most representative fruit-acid coffee; If you want to avoid sourness, buy Front Street PWN Golden Mandheling and Front Street Brazilian Queen Manor. They are medium-dark roasted with obvious aromas of nuts, caramel, etc., and have a low-acid and mellow taste.

/ Myth 1: Coffee brewing techniques

Regarding brewing techniques, many coffee novices "go crazy" and imitate the brewing methods of some baristas in coffee brewing competitions without understanding the principles of extraction. Front Street does not deny that the technique has an impact on the taste of coffee, but the importance of its influence is not dominant, because all brewing methods are based on one principle: the right amount of water at the right temperature at the right time through the coffee particles of the right size to extract coffee with the right flavor.

Front Street believes that as long as a fresh coffee bean is brewed with the correct grinding degree, water temperature, powder-to-water ratio, and a conventional brewing technique (circular and segmented water injection) to ensure that 100% of the injected water passes through the coffee particles, you can get a good cup of Pour over(V60) coffee.

When some coffee "masters" explain their brewing ideas, it is not difficult to find that behind each different technique is to better express the flavor characteristics of the coffee bean they brew, and these methods are often "tailor-made" for that coffee bean and may not necessarily apply to other coffee beans. We need to understand their intentions for doing this, and then think about the brewing method that suits the coffee beans we have. This can help you grow quickly on the brewing road instead of blindly following the trend.

/ Misunderstanding 2: Selection of filter cup

As Pour over(V60) coffee is favored by more and more people, a variety of coffee filter cups have appeared on the market, some with uniform extraction as the core, some with fast water filtration and anti-clogging as the core, etc. The emergence of these filter cups has brought more changes and plasticity to Pour over(V60) coffee. There are many friends who are just getting started and are very enthusiastic about buying various filter cups. Then they find that no matter which one they use, they don’t drink well, and they point the finger at the filter cup...

Whether it is a classic filter cup or an innovative filter cup, there are gains and losses in design. As long as their design and extraction principles are understood properly, any appliance can achieve equally excellent brewing. For example, the V60 filter cup has a 60-degree angle design that can guide water to the center, extending the contact time between water and coffee. The large-pore filter design at the bottom allows you to control the flavor extraction time of coffee by changing the size of water injection.

Another example is the cake filter cup. The flat bottom design allows the coffee powder bed to be distributed evenly up and down into a flat bottom structure. With the same amount of powder, the powder bed of the flat bottom structure is thinner, and the time for water flow to pass through the coffee powder is shorter. At the same time, the flat bottom structure can also make the extraction more uniform.

/ Misunderstanding 3: “Almost enough” for brewing parameters

"I don't even use a thermometer. The water temperature should be about the same by touch." For these "almost enough", there is a reason why the brewed coffee does not taste good. When brewing Pour over(V60) coffee, you usually need to use auxiliary tools such as electronic scales and thermometers. These seemingly "unimportant" tools will provide you with actual accuracy.

For example: When you have prepared 15g of coffee beans, you plan to use a water temperature of 91 degrees Celsius and a powder-to-liquid ratio of 1:13 to brew in a measuring cup. At this time, your grinder suddenly "picks up" some particles in a very unique way, and the final coffee particles ground out are only 14.7g. However, if you use the original parameters for brewing without knowing it, the final extracted coffee will have a flavor that deviates from the flavor brewed with the original parameters.

Front Street believes that these seemingly insignificant changes can always be reflected in the final coffee tasting. Therefore, when you have formulated a brewing parameter, you need to use auxiliary tools to strictly implement it. If each parameter is a little off, the final extracted coffee flavor will be very different.
