Each variety of coffee beans has different bean appearance (bean appearance) characteristics. This article will help you identify coffee bean varieties through the coffee bean appearance. What kind of flavor characteristics do different coffee varieties have? ~

| Typica (Typica)

Typica is native to Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan and is one of the oldest coffee varieties among many Arabica species. The top leaves of the Typica plant are copper-colored, so it is also called red-top coffee. Most of the Arabica coffee varieties we see today are derived from the Typica variety. Typica coffee beans are oval in shape, with a slender and full bean body, a clean taste and a quiet and clean flavor.

| Bourbon (Bourbon)

Bourbon is a natural variant of Typica. The biggest change in its coffee beans is that the long body of the Typica variety has been changed to a round body. Bourbon coffee was first planted in Reunion Island, Brazil. The place was also called Bourbon Island (le Bourbon) before 1789, so the coffee variety was also named "Bourbon". Bourbon coffee beans are short and round, with a thick body, a smooth taste and a distinctly sweet flavor.

| Gesha (Geisha)

Gesha comes from the Gesha forest in Ethiopia. Compared with other varieties, the biggest characteristic of Geisha coffee is that it has a very low yield. Its shape characteristics include long nodes on the coffee branches, a long distance between nodes, and fewer flowers and less fruit. Geisha coffee beans are slender in shape, with pointed ends and a plump and plump middle.

If you want Geisha coffee to have delicate floral and citrus flavor characteristics, the temperature in the planting area must not be too low to cause frost, the planting altitude must be high enough, and the temperature difference between day and night must be large enough to allow the Gesha coffee trees enough time to accumulate nutrients.

| Kadula (Caturra)

Caturra is a natural variation of the Bourbon variety. The branches of Caturra plants are closely spaced, and the fruit size is smaller than that of Bourbon. This allows more fruits to be produced in the same space, and the yield of coffee fruits will also be greatly increased. The Kadura coffee beans are round and long in shape, with a curved end at the end of the bean body. They have a bright and clean taste and a distinctly sweet flavor.

| Kaduai (Catuai)

Kaduai is a cultivated cross between Kaduura and New World. Kaduai inherits the New World’s attributes of high yield, strong disease resistance, and good cupping variety, and it inherits the small size, high-quality acidity, and sun-exposed coffee attributes of Kaduai. Since the plants are smaller, they can be planted at twice the density. Carduai coffee beans are oval and flat in shape, with the tail end of the bean body relatively slender. They have soft acidity, clean taste and rich fruit aroma.

| SL28 & SL34

From 1935 to 1939, the coffee varieties selected and bred by the Scott Laboratory were all prefixed with SL. The laboratory selected 42 varieties from different origins and conducted research on their yield, quality, drought resistance and disease resistance. After screening one by one, we finally got SL-28 and SL-34.

(SL28)

SL28 comes from the Bourbon genetic group. It has a short, round bean shape, a thick bean body, and a flavor characteristic of rising acidity and obvious sweetness. SL34 comes from the Typica genetic group and has an oval bean shape. When viewed from the side, it is not as plump as the Typica variety and looks flatter. It has a balanced and full flavor of sweet and sour, with a caramel aftertaste.

| Ethiopian native species (Heirloom)

18-21061GR53B94.jpg

Most Ethiopian varieties are named after this name. In fact, it is because there are so many varieties in Ethiopia. It is like the natural gene bank of Arabica. On the one hand, there are many varieties, and it is difficult to identify and classify. On the other hand, the Ethiopian government is unwilling to disclose the information of these varieties out of protection considerations, so they are collectively called Ethiopian native varieties.

Because there are so many varieties, they are planted and harvested in a mixed manner, so the beans of Ethiopian native varieties will vary in size. Most of the coffee beans of this variety show floral and fruity aromas and citrus sour flavor characteristics.
