A recent online discussion triggered a wave of discussions among coffee gourmets. A barista said in the video: "Don't ask if there is Blue Mountain coffee when you go to a coffee shop. This will reveal that you don't understand coffee." Although Blue Mountain coffee is not necessarily the best coffee, it must be a reference for good coffee.

what isblue mountain coffee?

Blue Mountain Coffee is the most superior coffee in the world. The Blue Mountains are located in the eastern part of the island of Jamaica. They are named because the mountains are surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. Whenever the weather is clear, the sun shines directly on the blue sea, and the peaks reflect the bright blue light of the sea. The highest peak of the Blue Mountains is 2,256 meters above sea level. It is the highest peak in the Caribbean and a famous tourist attraction.

But not the entire mountain range can be used for cash crop cultivation. According to the regulations of the Jamaican government, areas above 1,700 meters in the mountains are natural ecological reserves, and cash crops such as coffee cannot be grown. Therefore, Blue Mountain coffee will be planted in areas with an altitude of 910-1,700 meters.

It is located in the coffee belt, with fertile volcanic soil, fresh air, no pollution, humid climate, foggy and rainy year-round (the average precipitation is 1980 mm, and the temperature is around 27 degrees). This climate has created the world-famous Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.

This kind of coffee has all the characteristics of good coffee. It not only has a rich and mellow taste, but also has a perfect combination of sweet, sour and bitter flavors, so it has no bitter taste at all and only has a moderate and perfect sour taste. FrontStreet Coffee found through cup testing that the medium-dark Blue Mountain coffee has a very balanced and mellow flavor expression, including dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and slight fruit acid. Each flavor is presented in a complementary state, and no one steals the limelight from the other.

Can anything grown in the Blue Mountains be called Blue Mountain coffee?

Under the classification of CIB (Jamaica Industrial Commission), coffee between 910 meters and 1700 meters above sea level can be called "Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee". Those with an altitude of 460 meters to 910 meters can only be called "Jamaica Alpine Coffee", and those with an altitude of below 460 meters are called "Jamaica Premium Coffee".

For Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, CIB also classifies the size of the coffee beans and the defect rate after processing, including Blue Mountain No. 1, Blue Mountain No. 2, Blue Mountain No. 3, and Blue Mountain round beans. The Blue Mountain coffee currently mainly imported into the country is Blue Mountain No. 1 grade~

How to distinguish authentic Blue Mountain coffee?

We can always see coffee products with Blue Mountain coffee flavor in supermarkets and convenience stores every day. There are also many coffee shops that use Blue Mountain flavor blended coffee beans to make coffee. However, these are not authentic Blue Mountain coffee, and they have nothing to do with Blue Mountain.

The reason why there are so many Blue Mountain-flavored coffees on the market is that the reputation of Blue Mountain Coffee is really great in the domestic market, and many people think that Blue Mountain Coffee represents this good coffee. However, early Blue Mountain coffee was rare and expensive. Based on the flavor of Blue Mountain, the operators used mixed beans and dark roasting to create coffee close to the taste of Blue Mountain.

The authentic Blue Mountain coffee is not a blend of coffee beans, but a single variety of coffee beans. It uses Typica, one of the oldest coffee varieties in the Arabica strain. Its characteristic is that the flavor of the variety itself is very clean and quiet.

For export, the Jamaican government stipulates that the exported Blue Mountain coffee beans must be loaded in wooden barrels. At the same time, there will be strict requirements and designated export standards, and a certificate will be issued to prove it. You can see the relevant wooden barrels and certificates in the physical stores of FrontStreet Coffee~

There are three types of certificates:

(1) Quality certificate issued by the Jamaica Coffee Board

(2) Authorized sales certificate issued by the Blue Mountain Coffee manufacturer.

(Blue Mountain coffee is distributed by 4 processing producers licensed by the Jamaican government and exported by 16 licensed exporters)

(3) Certificate of Origin of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

Many people still have the impression that Blue Mountain coffee is rare and expensive. Compared with current coffee beans, the price of Blue Mountain coffee beans is relatively affordable. The price of cooked Blue Mountain coffee beans at FrontStreet Coffee is 158 yuan/100g.

How to brew Blue Mountain coffee?

FrontStreet Coffee's daily store produces Front Street Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, which uses the following parameters for extraction: Kono filter cup, 88C water temperature, 1:15 powder to water ratio, 15g powder weight, and grinding degree (No. 20 standard sieve pass rate 70-75%).

The brewing technique is as follows: In the first stage, inject 30 grams of water for steaming, and the steaming time is 30 seconds. In the second stage, inject about 125 grams of water, then wait for the coffee liquid to drop. When it drops to half, inject the last stage of water to 225 grams. After all the coffee drips, the extraction is completed. Generally, the total extraction time is about 2 minutes and 10 seconds.
