The AeroPress brewing appliance is not just a flash in the pan. Its appearance does not look like ordinary brewing equipment, and the company that invented this brewing appliance has its signature product not as a coffee device, but as a Frisbee. However, today's Aeropress has not only become a brewing appliance loved by many people around the world, but also has the Aeropress World Coffee Competition (WAC), and even a movie documentary specially shot for it.

The Origin of AeroPress

This small, two-part AeroPress can quickly brew thick-tasting coffee by simply pushing hot water through a filter. It is not like a hand brewing appliance. Its invention is inspired by the espresso machine, but it does not have the pressure brought by electricity and levers, but the pressure exerted by human hands.

It is also somewhat similar to a French press, although in the specialty coffee world, French press is not so popular. In addition, the recommended brewing water temperature and brewing time of the Aeropress are much shorter than those of the French Press. In other words, while the AeroPress is increasingly common, it was a unique brewing device when it first hit the market in 2005. Alan Adler, the boss of AeroPress, originally invented AeroPress using an engineer's method. In order to solve the bitter taste of coffee, he decided to find a solution by shortening the extraction time.

In order to shorten the extraction time, he found that he had to rely on pressure to extract, so he created a closed space to increase the pressure generated by pushing, allowing users to brew coffee faster. (However, there are many Aeropress brewing recipes now, and some extraction times are even longer than ordinary brewing methods.)

AeroPress makes a splash in the coffee world

At first, many in the specialty coffee industry responded with skepticism that AeroPress was a toy manufacturer rather than a revolutionary coffee brewing device. But over time, this began to change. Alan responded to these doubts with samples of brewed coffee, and word began to spread. After all, the most direct way to prove whether AeroPress is feasible is to use the flavor in the cup.

But with so many brewing appliances on the market, why can the AeroPress be the dazzling one?

Coffee is a global movement, and there are a dazzling array of brewing methods around the world. The Aeropress can brew delicious coffee in one minute, is easy to clean, easy to carry, affordable, and versatile. Perhaps there are other reasons behind the popularity of the AeroPress, but perhaps it allows for so many brewing experiments to evolve into a dedicated World AeroPress competition.

Brewing time, pressing time, amount of coffee powder, ratio of coffee powder to water, water temperature, upright or upside down use, etc., there are many ways to play the Aeropress, and these different ways of playing will allow you to get coffee with different flavors.

AeroPress Champions from Around the World

There are many professional competitions in the specialty coffee industry, such as the World Barista Competition WBC, World Brewing Competition WBrC, World Latte Art Competition WLAC, World Roasting Competition WRC, etc., in addition to many green bean evaluation competitions. But in 2008, a brand new competition emerged. Someone designed the Aeropress into a relaxed and fun competition WAC in Oslo, Norway. Despite the high demand, there were only three people participating at the time, initiated by Tim Varney and the famous barista Tim Wendelboe. (They still run the competition with Tim Williams)

But just like the AeroPress, the competition is starting to become more famous and well-known in the specialty coffee world. In 2018, 3,157 people from 61 countries attended the competition in person, and 68,265 people watched the broadcast online.

There are many ways to use the Aeropress, and these competitors are always finding new ways to use it and fine-tuning existing methods, which is a completely different development direction than using a coffee machine to the fullest in a barista competition. WAC is a national competition, and anyone can participate, even if they don’t have the resources of money and green beans like a coffee company. This is a competition with a very creative and experimental spirit, and these creativity and experiments inspire more delicious coffee.

Let’s make a cup of coffee with the Aeropress

The beans used this time are "Front Street Kenyan cherry tomatoes". The flavor of the Pour over(V60) coffee has the bright acidity of ebony plums and cherry tomatoes, and the sweetness of snow pears!

We can place two pieces of round filter paper on the filter cover in advance, and then wet them with water and fit them together. (If you don’t have round filter paper, you can use filter paper to cut it)‍
‍‍‍‍‍
1. Assemble the piston and the kettle body, then press the piston to about the ④ mark and buckle it! ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
2. Pour in the ground coffee powder, then add the same amount of hot water and time it!
3. Use the stirring rod to stir the coffee powder in the pot for up to ten seconds. (circle slowly)
4. Install the filter cover that fits the filter paper onto the pot body.
5. Then close the prepared container. ‍‍‍
6. When the time is up to one minute, reverse it and start pressing down to "press out" the coffee.

The extraction is complete, and it takes about 1 minute and 20 seconds. The stability of back pressure is higher than that of positive pressure, which can greatly reduce the difficulty for beginners to get started~ And the Kenya it extracts tastes sour and sweet, and the juice is very full, which is very good~
