Crazy? Can Coke be brewed into coffee? !

2026.10.20 FrontStreet Coffee 3

A friend said: "Did you know? I heard that Coke can make coffee."

Front Street (thinking): This person must not be stupid! How can you add everything to coffee...

But what I never expected was that Front Street actually found this method after searching online. Although I don’t know who “developed” it, many people did imitate it, and it seems to have a certain degree of playability. In this case, Front Street certainly cannot miss such a topic.

Coke brewing coffee, as the name suggests, uses cola instead of hot water to extract coffee substances. Therefore, in the ice hand brewing, the ice cubes and coffee remain unchanged, only the water is replaced by cola. Front Street noticed that everyone just uses ordinary iced cola, with or without sugar, just choose according to your preference;

Because I don’t know what the final effect will be, I chose medium-light roasted Front Street blackberries for coffee beans. It is processed with black honey and is a sweeter coffee with soft acidity and less obvious bitterness, so it can better capture the extraction of cola.

In order to reduce too many variables in the process, the parameters used by Front Street this time are consistent with the ice hand brewing shared on weekdays, that is, fine grinding, high water temperature, 10 times the amount of water as coffee powder, and 5 times the amount of ice cubes, and the brewing time is less than 2 minutes.

Coffee Bean: Front Street Costa Rican Blackberry

Powder amount: 15g

Ice Coke: 150g

Grinding degree: fine sugar (EK43s scale 9 grid, No. 20 sieve mesh screening rate 82%)

Ice cubes: 75g

Water injection method: three-stage

First, put ice cubes into the lower pot, then pour 15g of Front Street blackberry coffee powder into the washed filter paper;

In the first stage, pour 30g of iced cola with a small flow of water to ensure that all the coffee powder is moistened (because the coke can is difficult to control the water flow, you can also transfer it to a hand brewing pot to fill it with water). As the two come into contact, you can see a rich group of bubbles surging in the filter cup, and the liquid reaches the pot directly;

After 30 seconds, inject the second 60g section, still using a small flow of water to circulate, so that the coffee powder and cola have sufficient contact time;

When all the coffee liquid has penetrated into the lower pot, continue to inject the third section of 60g in a circle, keeping the small flow of water at the center position. When the weight shows 150g, stop the action and wait for all the flow to finish. Finally, shake the cola coffee and ice cubes evenly, and you can start tasting.

After one sip, it was exactly what Front Street thought. It was full of sweetness brought by Feizhai water, followed by a slight sourness. The bubbles in the cola amplified the bitterness of the coffee. Although the taste was not particularly dark, it was definitely not very delicious... Okay, Front Street admitted that it was just a cup of iced coke with a slight coffee flavor.

The reason for this result is very simple: first of all, the temperature of ice cola is too low, and it contains a lot of substances. Its extraction strength is far from meeting the requirements, and it cannot be compared with hot water at all;

Secondly, the rich bubbles of carbonated drinks will inhibit the release of soluble flavor substances in coffee, causing both parties to pass by each other throughout the process, and flow into the pot before there is a chance to react. So it is conceivable that the coffee powder after being washed through the cola still retains a large amount of aroma substances.

Just when Front Street was worrying about how to "make" good coffee with Coke, he suddenly had an idea. Although we can't directly use Coke for extraction, we can replace it with ice cubes to cool down and dilute the coffee while providing a "Cola flavor". This doesn't kill two birds with one stone. In order to verify the conjecture, Front Street used the same coffee beans this time to make two pots of Pour over(V60) ice. One pot was brewed with Coke ice cubes, and the other was brewed with regular ice cubes. The other parameters remained the same.

Coffee Bean: Front Street Costa Rican Blackberry

Powder amount: 15g

Pink to water ratio: 1:10

Water temperature: 93℃

Grinding degree: fine sugar (EK43s scale 9 grid, No. 20 sieve mesh screening rate 82%)

Ice cubes: 75g

Water injection method: three-stage

On the first night, Front Street had already poured Coca-Cola into a mold and froze it into large ice cubes. Before the actual brewing, he took out 75g and put it into the lower pot, then put the filter cup and filter paper, as well as the ground coffee powder, and it was ready.

In the first stage, still inject 30g of hot water in a circle and steam for 30 seconds; in the second stage, maintain a small flow of water and inject 60g in a clockwise circle. When the coffee liquid is almost finished flowing out of the powder bed, you can start to inject 60g of hot water in the third stage using the same method.

The drip filtering ends in about 1 minute and 45 seconds. Finally, mix the coffee liquid and Coke ice cubes from the next pot thoroughly until they are completely cooled, and you can taste it.

Compared with the regular hand brewing, the coffee liquid using Coke ice cubes is darker to the naked eye. In terms of taste, this time the Coke Ice Hand Brew finally has more coffee flavor. The entrance has the dried raisins, floral aroma and berry flavor brought by the Front Street blackberries, as well as the ice sweetness of the soda. Perhaps the bitterness of the coffee itself is low, so the overall combination is not abrupt, but rather harmonious, and it tastes refreshing and soft.
