Why do so few coffee shops sell affogato?

2026.10.20 FrontStreet Coffee 6

There are more and more fancy ways to drink coffee. In addition to the traditional drinks, different countries will also combine local flavors to create new combinations, such as Vietnamese egg coffee, Vienna coffee with cream, Spanish latte with sweet condensed milk... and Italians' favorite dessert - Affogato.

Although the wonderful taste of affogato is popular with many coffee lovers, and the preparation is very simple, if you go to a nearby cafe to order, I believe that more than 90% of the time you will not find affogato. Why is this? Front Street believes that there are mainly three reasons.

1. Too little fame

Affogato is Italian and translates as "drowned", which probably describes the scene where ice cream is "drowned" by espresso. Although we can't find out who was the first to pour espresso into ice cream, after so many years of precipitation, affogato has become a classic method in the coffee industry.

Affogato was originally a niche Italian dessert (because it focused more on ice cream than coffee). It was not until the early 2000s that it gained recognition from more coffee lovers in other countries. Since 2010, cafes and restaurants in Europe that offer affogato have proliferated. By adding various novel ingredients, such as pistachios, cookies, cocoa powder, etc., it not only provides appearance but also enriches the level, making affogato always active on major social media.

But in China, compared to those unpopular fancy coffees, such as piccolo and Spanish latte, affogato is far behind them in terms of popularity and frequency of appearance, let alone the popular traditional methods such as latte, Australian white, cappuccino and mocha. If you don’t believe it, just grab a few lucky ones around and ask.

2. The taste is too exciting

Traditionally, a cup of affogato only consists of espresso and ice cream, without any other "fancy" ingredients. For people who drink "bitter coffee" all year round, the combination of the two not only satisfies the feelings of cold and hot, fragrant and smooth, but also brings a strong contrast between bitter and sweet to the mouth. As the ice cream melts, the concentration of the coffee is also constantly decreasing, making this dessert easier to eat and still leaving a fragrance on the lips and teeth after the whole meal.

But for friends who are not used to "bitterness", affogato may not be delicious. Some people are used to drinking large latte, preferring milk flavor > coffee flavor. Even if the affogato ice cream accounts for the majority, the taste buds can't resist the bitterness and excitement brought by espresso. Maybe after taking the first sip, they have no idea of continuing, and they may even want to add some milk and mix well before drinking.

3. Repurchase rate is too low

Unlike other espresso coffees that offer hot drinks, affogato comes with ice-cold ice cream balls, which are generally noticed only in summer. In autumn and winter, almost no one cares about it, and the sales volume is much lower than other iced coffees. This will increase the loss of materials, soEven ifMost merchants know that the preparation of affogato is very simple, and considering the operating cost, they will choose not to put it on the menu. Facing customers who want to eat affogato,Some thoughtful coffee shopLet the person buy their own ice cream so all they have to do is order the espresso and pour it in.

Since you know how to make affogato and coffee shops don’t sell it, the best way is to make it yourself at home. Front Street believes that based on the dessert attributes of affogato, it actually does not have high requirements for raw materials, and there are not too many restrictions on parameters. There is no fixed formula. What proportion to use and which coffee beans to choose completely depend on personal preference. As long as you pay a little attention to the small details, you can make an Italian dessert that is better than what is in the store.

When it comes to the choice of coffee beans, if you usually like to drink black coffee or high-concentration milk coffee, it is best to choose medium-dark roasted or dark roasted coffee beans that can highlight the rich and mellow taste, such as Front Street Black Cocoa Blend and Front Street Autumn Chestnut Blend with lower acidity;

Or if you want to make a non-bitter flavored affogato, it is recommended to buy medium roasted ones.Front Street Strawberry Candy espresso and Front Street Oiran SOE, they have a soft sweet and sour texture, and at the same timeThe nutty aroma goes well with the sweet ice cream.

The same is true for extraction. We can use a special Italian machine to freshly extract espresso, or it can be espresso brewed with a Moka pot. In short, as long as the aroma is solid enough to avoid being too bitter or sour.Taste, just make sure it's not covered by the ice cream.

If you want to replicate the original affogato, then specify the vanilla flavored ice cream, because Italians feel that only its aroma and sweetness are softer and will not easily take away the halo of coffee. It can also make the body of the coffee itself stronger and neutralize part of the bitterness. If you prefer to make your own dessert, you can actually choose your favorite flavor. For example, Front Street once combined chocolate and matcha ice cream to make an affogato, which also has a good effect.

After talking about the key points, let Front Street try the whole cup~

Preparation: a box of ice cream, espresso coffee, spoon(Add another cup if necessary)
First, use a spoon to dig a circular hole directly in the middle of the ice cream. The purpose is to let the espresso gather. If you want to have a better visual effect, you can alsoScoop out the ice cream, roll it into a large ball and place it in a cup.

Then use 20g of Front Street Qiuri blended coffee powder to extract 36g of coffee liquid for 32 seconds, and immediately pour it on the ice cream, and the affogato is complete. (PS: If you want the finished product to look better, pour the concentrate as much as possible. This will allow the coffee fat to slide off the surface of the ice cream without melting it too much.)
