The flag of Ethiopia consists of three parallel and equal horizontal rectangles of green, yellow and red from top to bottom, with the national emblem pattern in the middle of the flag. Among them, green represents fertile land, mild climate and rich plant resources, and also symbolizes hope for the future, while yellow symbolizes peace and fraternity, and also represents the people's determination to build the country. Red symbolizes the people's readiness to shed blood and sacrifice to defend the motherland. The national emblem in the middle is a golden five-pointed star radiating light on a blue circle. Blue symbolizes peace, the light represents prosperity, and the five-pointed star represents diversity and unity.

Ethiopia is dominated by mountainous plateaus, most of which belong to the Ethiopian Plateau, accounting for 2/3 of the country. The Great Rift Valley runs through the entire territory, with an average altitude of nearly 3,000 meters. It is known as the "Roof of Africa", while the northeast and south are desert and semi-desert areas, accounting for 25% of the country's area.

The average altitude of Ethiopia is 2,450 meters. Such a high altitude means that the annual average temperature in Ethiopia is 16°C. The whole year is roughly divided into dry season and rainy season, with annual rainfall of 1,237 mm. The country is rich in natural resources, with abundant water resources, high-altitude mountainous areas, and more than 50 volcanoes. These resources make the country an ideal area for coffee cultivation.

Ethiopian coffee producing areas

Ethiopia has several coffee-producing regions, including Sidamo, Harrar, Kaffa, Limmu, Lekempti, Tepi, Bebeka and Bale. Among them, Yirgacheffe, Guji, Sidamo and Bebeka are relatively well-known production areas.

Sidamo: After 1995, Ethiopia adopted a federal system of management. At the same time, out of respect for the culture of various ethnic groups within the territory, the local government also re-planned according to the main ethnic residential areas and languages. In this way, Sidama was placed under the jurisdiction of the new Southern National and Linguistic Autonomous Prefecture, and the region was renamed to its original name in history: Sidama. But at that time, in order to strengthen the promotion of the uniqueness of coffee in the country, the Ethiopian government applied for patents for the names of three production areas in 2004, and chose the old name of Sidamo® to register Sidamo coffee.

Until now, domestic consumers have always been accustomed to calling the coffee here "Sidamo". Sidamo straddles the fertile highlands south of Lake Awasa in the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, with an altitude between 1,400 and 2,200 meters and annual rainfall between 1,200 and 2,000 millimeters. The high altitude, abundant rainfall, pleasant climate, and fertile geological nutrients provide an ideal environment for growing coffee. There are many well-known treatment plants in the Sidamo production area, such as Santavini treatment plant, Gauss treatment plant, etc.

Yirga Cheffe: Yirga Cheffe is a small town in the northwest of Sidamo Province. It is located on the eastern edge of the Great Rift Valley. It is also one of the highest altitude production areas in Ethiopia, with an altitude of 1,750-2,200 meters. In ancient language, Yirga means settling down, while Cheffe means wetland. Because Yirgacheffe has a humid and mild climate, abundant rainfall, fertile land, and ample sunshine, the production area originally belonged to the Sidamo production area. Because this area can breed unique floral and fruity aromas, unpredictable and unique flavor coffee beans, it was independently established as a coffee production area.

Guji: The Guji production area was once part of the Sidamo production area. Due to its excellent and highly recognizable flavor, it was independently classified as a new production area by the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) in 2010. The production area is located in southern Ethiopia. It has towering mountains, highlands, plateaus, valleys and plains, with complex and changeable terrain. These rich landforms have created diverse microclimates, and have volcanic soil, dense forests, and an average altitude of more than 1,800 meters. The temperature difference between day and night is large, which slows down the growth rate of coffee fruits and allows the coffee beans to develop rich flavors. There are many small production areas in the Guji production area, such as Hambella, Uraga, Shakiso, etc. Hambella is well-known to the Chinese for Oiran coffee beans. Now the new Front Street Oiran Geisha coffee beans for the 2025 production season have also been put on the shelves for everyone.

Bebeka: Bench Maji production area, also called Bebeka, because Bebeka is the capital of Bench Maji District. It is located in southwestern Ethiopia and is a district under the Southern Ethnic State, only a few kilometers away from South Sudan. There is a well-known coffee estate here, Gesha Village Coffee Estate, and the Gesha variety trees in Gesha Village Estate are found in the wild forest of Panchimaji.
