Long Black|What is Long Black Coffee? What is the difference between long black and American americano? How to make a cup of longblack coffee?

In the past, coffee shop menus only had simple black coffee and milk coffee, which were roughly the difference between American style, latte, and pour-over. With the "involution" of the coffee industry, various unpopular Italian coffee drinks have been introduced into the fixed menu, such as the long black coffee that I will talk about today on the front street.

What is long black coffee?

Rumor has it that the Americano was invented to satisfy the tastes of American soldiers stationed abroad during World War II. Americans can't drink strong and bitter espresso directly like Italians, so they add water to dilute it until the concentration reaches an acceptable range. This kind of "watery" black coffee is not the preference of Australians. Australians prefer to pursue rich coffee flavor and concentrated oil. Baristas also began to adjust in the direction of "espresso", and gradually derived two Australian-style coffee drinks, Long Black and Flat White.

Long Black coffee has a richer coffee flavor than Americano coffee, and the cup size is smaller. The usual way to make long black coffee is to extract two parts of espresso (40g) into a cup filled with 100-120ml of water, and the liquid surface retains rich crema. The Long Black made in this way can have a rich coffee flavor and directly feel the taste of coffee oil.

What is the difference between long black coffee and American style?

In order to distinguish Long Black from American style, many people think that in American style, you put the espresso first and then pour the water; while in Long Black, in order to retain the oil, you pour the water first and then the coffee. However, most baristas today do not worry about whether to add water or coffee first. In order to improve production efficiency, many stores fill the water first and then pour the coffee, so it is of little significance to emphasize this difference.

The most obvious difference between the two types of coffee, Americano and Long Black, is the amount of water added. Americano coffee generally adds more water, and the ratio of coffee to water is usually between 1:5-1:8. This is because Americans are accustomed to drinking drip coffee, which has a very low concentration and just a little coffee flavor. However, Australians are pursuing a stronger coffee flavor, using smaller-capacity cups, with less water, and naturally higher concentration.

The flavor of coffee depends on the Italian coffee beans used. For example, the Americano coffee produced in the Front Street store uses sunflower warm sun blended coffee beans roasted by Front Street itself. The ideal extraction should have the flavor of wine, vanilla, cream, chocolate, and berry. In order to highlight these aromas, Front Street finally determined the ratio of 1:3 after many comparisons. Prepare a cup of 100-120ml hot water and pour 40 grams of extracted coffee liquid onto the surface.

Long BlackIs there any ice?

Friends who often drink American coffee should know that there are two options: iced Americano and hot Americano. Among them, iced Americano is often people’s first choice because of its affordable price, refreshing and delicious taste. So does Long Black have iced drinks?

Just like Flat White, Long Black does not have iced drinks. If you want to taste ice-cold black coffee, Front Street recommends choosing the fully iced American style. That is to say, no water is needed based on the iced American style. Without the participation of water, the espresso liquid is poured directly into the ice cubes, and the warm espresso slowly melts a small amount of the ice cubes by gently shaking, thereby diluting the heavy concentration. When you taste it, you can also feel the aroma and rich taste brought by the oil.
