Many friends are very curious about long black coffee. On the surface, it is not much different from American coffee, so many friends are confused about the difference between long black and American coffee.
Long black is a black coffee originating from Australia. In Australia, people generally use Black Coffee to refer to black coffee and White Coffee to refer to coffee with milk added. Espresso is called Short Black. After Short Black is added with an appropriate amount of water, it is called Long Black. In China, it is generally translated as Long Black or Australian Black.

Doesn't it look different from American coffee? So some people forcefully draw out the difference between the two - Americano is to put espresso first and then pour water to dilute it; while long black coffee is to add water to the cup first and then pour espresso.
What is the basis for this? It turns out that the biggest difference between the two methods is the degree of preservation of Crema (coffee oil). If you put the espresso first and then pour the water, the Crema will be dispersed; if you put the water first and then pour the espresso, the Crema will remain intact on the surface. This layer of Crema can provide a full taste to the coffee.
That sounds perfectly reasonable, but it's not the difference between an Americano and a Long Black. Because the Americano coffee making method does not indicate whether to pour water first and then coffee, or pour coffee first and then water. Therefore, any method of Americano coffee is fine. But long black coffee is particular about the order of water and coffee. The cup is filled with water first, and then the espresso is extracted into the water. Front Street probably wanted to find out the difference, so the rumor that there was a difference due to the order of pouring spread.

The most obvious difference between the two types of coffee, Americano and Long Black, is the amount of water added. Americano coffee generally adds more water, and the ratio of coffee to water is usually between 1:5-1:8. This is because Americans are accustomed to drinking drip coffee, which has a very low concentration and just has a slight coffee flavor. Therefore, after the rise of Italian coffee, American coffee made with espresso as the base also needs to add a lot of water to restore the light coffee flavor.
Australians are more pursuing the taste of coffee. Front Street shared before that the difference in taste between Flat White and latte coffee is that the coffee taste of Flat White will be richer and richer. Long Black coffee has a richer coffee flavor than Americano coffee, and the cup size is smaller. The usual way to make long black coffee is to extract two parts of espresso (40g) into a cup filled with 100-120ml of water, and the liquid surface retains rich crema.

Adding 1:3 water is currently the concentration of diluted espresso. On the one hand, it reduces the irritation of espresso. On the other hand, the diluted coffee flavor is more easily felt. Retaining the oil on the surface can keep the coffee's mellow taste, giving it a unique experience.
