There are many ways to brew coffee, such as: French press, siphon, pour-over, Italian, cold brew, American, etc. There are also many names, especially in some places where the names are different. Next, Front Street will talk about the differences between these types of coffee. These types of coffee are also relatively common among everyone.

For example: Americano, Long Black and Lungo, Italian coffee, the differences between these types of coffee.

AmericanoAmericano

Americano and Italiano are our most common. Americano, people who understand English and coffee drinkers are not unfamiliar with this name. It is called "American coffee" in Chinese. It originated during World War II when the U.S. military in Europe couldn't get used to the extremely rich Espresso (drip black coffee popular in the United States), so they added water to the coffee to dilute it. Therefore, American coffee is essentially to dilute the concentration of coffee to a concentration suitable for Americans to drink at that time. Later, Italians immigrated to the United States, and Italian cafes emerged in the United States. They promoted American coffee based on espresso, and also expressed the idea of diluting espresso by pouring coffee first and then water in the "watering" sequence. Until now, Americano's method does not pay much attention to the order. It is just about the difference between retaining the oil and dispersing the oil.

There are two other drinks that are often confused with American coffee and difficult to distinguish. They are Long Black and Lungo.

Long Black long black coffee = water + Espresso

American coffee = Espresso + water. In Australia, a black coffee called "Long Black" is popular. As the name suggests, it is a cup of coffee without milk. Basically, black coffee does not add milk, so it is suitable for people who are lactose intolerant or don't like milk.

The method of making Long Black coffee is to first pour hot water into the coffee cup, and then pour Espresso. Long Black (translated as long black coffee) is a specialty coffee native to Australia. It is also composed of espresso and water. After the Australian version of latte flat white became popular in China, some cafes directly introduced Australian Italian coffee products as a whole and integrated them into the existing Italian coffee menu.

Long Black is translated as Australian black coffee. It also has another name "short black", which is the Australian name for black coffee diluted with espresso and water. Long Black originates from Australia. Australians like stronger coffee. American coffee cannot meet their needs. Espresso is also called Short Black in Australia. Therefore, Long Black is a slightly diluted espresso that maintains the richness of the oil while reducing the concentration. The cup size of Long Black will be smaller than that of Americano coffee, about 150ml. The water is poured first and then the espresso. This will retain the oil. Since the amount of diluted water is less than that of Americano coffee, the taste and richness will be slightly better.

When Italian coffee was introduced to Australia, New Zealand and other countries, Australians loved this rich coffee very much, and various Australian coffee drinks were developed according to their tastes. For example, Starbucks' Flat White coffee is from Australia. The Australians make Long Black by extracting two parts of espresso (40g) and pouring it into a cup filled with 100-120ml of hot water. The liquid surface retains rich crema. The Long Black made in this way can have a rich coffee flavor and directly feel the taste of coffee oil.

Front Street also uses double espresso when making long back coffee, with a ratio of 1:3. First prepare 120g of hot water, then pour the extracted double espresso into the hot water.

The most obvious difference between American and Long Black coffee is the amount of water added. Americano coffee generally adds more water, and the ratio of coffee to water is usually between 1:5-1:8. This is because Americans are accustomed to drinking drip coffee, which has a very low concentration and just a little coffee flavor. However, Australians pursue a stronger coffee flavor and use smaller-capacity cups. The proportion of water is also smaller, and the concentration is naturally higher. After the rise of Italian coffee, American coffee made with espresso as the base also needs to add a lot of water to restore the light coffee flavor.

Front Street believes that there is no fixed ratio for how much water needs to be added to Long Black. It is more about the barista's understanding of the flavor and tonality of the coffee beans, and the amount of water to be added is determined based on the flavor that he hopes to express. For example, the Americano coffee produced at the Front Street store is made from Sunflower Warm Sun blended coffee beans roasted by Front Street itself. The ideal extraction should have the flavor of wine, vanilla, cream, chocolate, and berry. In order to highlight these aromas, Front Street made many comparisons and finally determined the ratio of 1:3.

LUNGOcoffee

LUNGO has also had some established fans in the market in recent years. LUNGO coffee extends the extraction time of Espresso to about one minute, and the amount of coffee liquid extracted is about 50 to 60 ml. This drink is called "lungo coffee"; there are also baristas who directly extract the amount of coffee for a cup, such as 200ml.

"lungo" means "long, extended" in Italian, and it is obviously defined as the elongated version of espresso. In fact, talking about the flavor in espresso coffee really only appeared in recent years. In the past, coffee beans were generally roasted very black, and looking for flavor in them was like looking for colorful colors in black. A good cup of concentrate is satisfying in terms of taste and stimulating in concentration. After it is finished, it will no longer return a bitter taste, leaving a burnt aroma in the mouth, that's all.

There is no accurate data on making Lungo (the Espresso parameters of each cafe are slightly different), and abroad, Lungo does not have a clear definition of the ratio. It just represents a synonym for extending the extraction of espresso. As for how much longer, each cafe also has different opinions. Front Street uses 20 grams of coffee powder when making Lungo coffee. For example, it takes 56-60 seconds to extract 100 grams of coffee liquid (ratio 1:5), which is twice as long as that of espresso.

The lungo made in this way is equivalent to directly diluting the espresso for a longer time when extracting espresso. Because of the prolonged extraction time, all the flavor molecules in the coffee are extracted and then the remaining wood fiber flavor of the coffee begins to be extracted. Therefore, the taste will be full of bitterness, with obvious wine aroma, but other flavors are somewhat lacking. We know that when extracting espresso, the front section is usually richer, and the coffee liquid that comes out becomes lighter towards the back. Then Lungo coffee has more capacity than Espresso, and its concentration will be lower than Espresso.

Australians are more pursuing the taste of coffee. Front Street shared before that the difference in taste between Flat White and latte coffee is that the coffee taste of Flat White will be richer and richer. Long Black coffee has a richer coffee flavor than Americano coffee, and the cup size is smaller. The usual way to make long black coffee is to extract two parts of espresso (40g) into a cup filled with 100-120ml of water, and the liquid surface retains rich crema.

espresso

Espresso is a beverage made by forcing high-pressure water near boiling through finely ground coffee. Espresso is generally thicker than coffee made by other methods, containing a higher concentration of suspended and dissolved solids, such as crema (a creamy foam) on the surface. Because of its pressurized production process, espresso has a strong taste and a very high concentration of chemicals.

It is often used as a base for other drinks, such as latte, cappuccino, macchiato, mocha, and Americano. Italian espresso coffee contains more caffeine per unit volume than other coffee drinks, but because its volume is smaller and the contact time between hot water and coffee powder is very short, usually only about 20 to 30 seconds, the total caffeine content is lower. While the actual caffeine content of a coffee drink is affected by volume, bean origin, roasting method, and other factors, a "typical" Italian espresso coffee contains about 80 mg of caffeine, while a serving of drip coffee contains 95 to 200 mg of caffeine depending on the type of coffee bean; especially Robusta coffee beans.

makeAmericano, long black coffee, and longo coffee all require the use of espresso beans. AndespressoBasically, it's mainly about blending. Why mix it? There are three reasons for this: price, stability, and flavor. These three points are an "impossible triangle", which means that you cannot have all three, and you can only give up one to get the other two.

Take the four Italian coffee beans from Front Street as an example. The initial purpose of blending coffee beans is to stabilize and balance the flavor of the coffee, just like Front Street’s Front Street Boutique Blend 100% Arabica coffee beans are blended from Colombian and Brazilian coffee beans. Brazil and Colombia are both major coffee producing countries, and the quality is very stable every year. The balance of Brazilian coffee beans and the mellowness of Colombian coffee beans give this bean a good performance. The priority is both stability and flavor. The mellow taste and nutty main tone have a slightly fruity flavor, making it suitable for use in boutique coffee shops.

Front Street's Front Street Black Cocoa Blend (100% Arabica) beans is a product developed with cost-effectiveness in mind. It is a blend of coffee beans from Yunnan and Brazil, ensuring the flavor and stability of the extracted espresso at a price advantage.

Front Street’s Front Street Commercial Blend beans are made from coffee beans from Colombia, Brazil and Vietnam, of which Vietnam’s is Robusta, accounting for 10%. Italian cafes like to add Robust beans to their blended bean recipes because Robusta can provide richer coffee crema and higher caffeine content. Therefore, adding a small amount of Robusta beans can make the taste of espresso more mellow. The espresso produced will have a richer caramel chocolate flavor when paired with milk. This Italian coffee bean is suitable for lovers of full body or some merchants specializing in Italian coffee.

The last one was developed with flavor in mind, and is also the coffee beans used in the Front Street store - Sunflower Warm Sun Blend coffee beans. It is a blend of Yirgacheffe red cherries and Honduran sherry barrel coffee beans. With the aroma of sherry and the flavors of chocolate, vanilla cream and sherry, it has excellent taste in both the concentration itself and the Americano or milk coffee. Suitable for friends who are pursuing coffee flavor.

Front Street believes that all kinds of coffee brewing are delicious, especially for friends who like coffee. But when it comes to which one tastes better, it all depends on personal taste. After all, everyone likes different flavors. But Front Street sells coffee beans from all major producing countries, including 9 types of coffee beans from major producing countries. Front Street Brewing Coffee Suggestions:

Regarding coffee brewing, Front Street has always believed that the freshness of coffee beans has a great relationship with the flavor of coffee. Therefore, the coffee beans shipped by Front Street Coffee are all roasted within 5 days. The purpose of Front Street Roasting is "freshly roasted and good coffee", so that every customer who orders receives the freshest coffee. The bean-growing period of coffee is about 4-7 days, so the flavor is at its best when customers get it.

 168120455504fb27.jpg

For those who need to grind the coffee beans, Front Street would like to remind you that if the coffee beans are ground in advance, there is no need to raise the beans. Because during the transportation process, the pressure generated by the carbon dioxide in the packaging can also make the coffee flavor mellower, so you can make a cup of coffee immediately after receiving the coffee powder. But the coffee powder needs to be brewed in time, because the coffee powder oxidizes quickly when exposed to air, which means that the flavor of the coffee will dissipate relatively quickly, and the flavor of the coffee will not be so good. Therefore, Front Street recommends buying whole beans and grinding them freshly, so that you can better taste the flavor of the coffee.
