One of the biggest advantages of the Moka Pot is that it is easy to operate! It is suitable for beginners to brew coffee, and for experts to study the powder-to-water ratio and extraction degree. The pot body is divided into three parts. It only requires three steps: add water, add powder, and heat to extract a cup of espresso. When we heat the Moka pot, the water in the lower pot is first heated and converted into steam, forming a certain pressure, causing the water vapor to push up from the bottom. When the hot water reacts with the coffee powder upwards, the increasing pressure will continue to push the extracted coffee liquid to the upper pot. At this time, we will get the rich coffee liquid we need.
moka potThe high-temperature pressurized extraction method is similar to our common Italian coffee. The increase in extraction pressure brings together the coffee flavor better, so the coffee extracted by the Moka pot also has a rich and mellow taste. When using a double-valve Moka pot to make coffee, a pressure accumulating valve is added to the original. The increase in pressure makes the coffee more concentrated and contains more coffee crema.

moka potDifferences from espresso machines
It should be noted here that althoughmoka potThe extracted coffee liquid has a stronger taste, but it is still somewhat different from our common Italian coffee. The espresso we now refer to is extracted at more than 9 atmospheric pressures. The resulting coffee liquid is rich and silky, high-quality, delicate and rich. The maximum pressure of a Moka pot is only 2 atmospheres, which is far less than the pressure value used by commercial espresso machines. The resulting coffee liquid is relatively thin, and the flavor and taste are not as rich and mellow as espresso.

In a coffee shop, you can see that there is golden rich oil floating on the top of the freshly made espresso. However, the extraction pressure of the Moka pot is lower, and the extracted coffee is thinner, so it cannot be completely called espresso. But if we want to drink a cup of rich coffee faster at home, a Moka pot must be a very good choice. Although the operation steps of the Moka pot are very simple, you need to pay attention to some details, otherwise the coffee will easily become burnt and unpalatable.
What beans are suitable for moka pot coffee?
Since the Moka pot is a pressurized extraction method, if light-roasted coffee is used, the texture of light-roasted beans is harder, and a finer grinding degree is usually required to improve the extraction rate. However, fine grinding under high temperature and pressure can easily make the coffee sour and irritating, and it is also more difficult to extract the aroma of oil. Therefore, when using a Moka pot, it is recommended that dark roasted Italian blended coffee beans be used as raw materials. This not only makes it easier to drink fragrant coffee with oil, but also makes our extraction state more stable. It also becomes a daily ration of coffee because of the affordable price.

How to use a Moka pot
Before formal production, we need to equip fresh coffee beans, a grinder and a heated gas stove (or induction cooker). Coffee Bean Front Street uses the top-selling Front Street classic Italian blended coffee.

First remove the base of the Moka pot and add warm water to the lower pot. This can shorten the brewing time and prevent the coffee powder from being heated too quickly and causing the flavor to burn and become bitter. The water volume is controlled below the pressure relief valve line. If the liquid level exceeds the pressure relief valve, it may explode due to excessive pressure, so be careful. What is injected here on Front Street is 130ml.

To extract rich black coffee, the grinding degree must be finer than that of ordinary hand brewing. The Front Street store uses an EK-43s grinder with a scale of 0.5. Pour the ground coffee powder into the grinder trough, fill it until it is nine-tenths full, smooth it out with your fingers and put it into the base. There is no need to press hard, as an air layer that is too tight can easily block the flow of water upwards, thus affecting extraction.

Then tighten the upper pot and lower pot and heat them on a gas stove or induction cooker. When using an open flame, be careful not to exceed the base of the Moka Pot. Wait for the Moka pot to heat up. When you hear a hissing sound, turn to low heat and the coffee liquid and oil will slowly flow out. When you see that the upper pot of coffee liquid is half full, you can turn off the heat source, move the pot to the table, and use the remaining temperature and pressure in the pot to continue extracting the remaining coffee liquid.

Finally, pour the extracted coffee liquid into the cup and taste it directly. In the mouth, there is rich dark chocolate, sweet and sour caramel, and the aroma of roasted nuts. Adding a certain proportion of hot water brings out the hazelnuts, and the latte has the sweetness of milk chocolate.
Small details you need to pay attention to when using a Moka pot
Our common Moka pots are generally metal in shape. Try not to touch the pot body when heating at high temperatures. You can use a wet towel to avoid burns. If we hear a whining sound, but the coffee liquid never overflows from the pot, it is likely that the liquid outlet is blocked. We should turn off the heat source first to avoid excessive internal pressure and causing a safety hazard.

If the grinding degree of the coffee powder is too coarse, it will cause problems such as insufficient extraction and splashing. If the grinding degree is too fine, it will cause over-extraction, and the coffee will be burnt and bitter, making it difficult to drink. The powder trough needs to be filled and leveled. If there is not enough coffee powder, the water in the lower pot will not be fully extracted when it enters the middle powder layer under the action of steam pressure, which will cause the upper pot to splash significantly and the taste of the coffee will be difficult to describe.
Front Street will clean the Moka pot in time after every use to avoid coffee grounds stains, which are easy to transfer odor and burn bitterness. If old coffee stains are left on the filter, gasket, and extraction channel, they may cause blockage and affect normal extraction.
