Nowadays, people like to drink coffee not only in coffee shops, but also want to buy coffee beans, brew a cup at home, and taste it slowly. However, how to store the coffee beans or coffee powder you buy so that they will not spoil so quickly? How can you maintain the fresh flavor? Especially if you buy some specialty coffee, you must keep it well.

This is for a coffee novice. Of course, people who know coffee may not necessarily understand the basic knowledge of these coffees. Front Street will tell you about it, so what is the best way to store coffee? There are some ways to keep our coffee delicious and fresh, and some ways to do the opposite. It all depends on external factors that can affect the coffee while it's being stored.

How do external factors affect coffee beans?

It's important to maintain freshness for optimal flavor. There are 4 factors in the environment that affect the freshness of coffee: direct light, oxygen, moisture and heat. Let’s explore their effects and how to prevent them from affecting your coffee.

1.direct light

Direct light, especially sunlight, can spoil coffee because it accelerates the degradation of the beans. To avoid this, keep your coffee in a dark place like a cabinet or in a dark container.

2.oxygen

Allowing coffee beans to interact with oxygen can also cause coffee to go bad. In fact, after roasting occurs, oxygen begins the oxidation process of coffee. Most packaging helps prevent this with specially designed valves that allow carbon dioxide to escape while blocking out oxygen. When you store coffee, air-tight containers with rubber seals are the best way to prevent this.

3.Moisture (humidity)

Keeping your coffee somewhere dry will do wonders for freshness. Humidity can cause your coffee beans to go bad quickly. Ground coffee is more affected by moisture. If there is too much moisture, it will not only spoil the coffee but also cause it to clump.

4.high temperature

It's best to keep your coffee cool, as heat can cause the beans to lose their freshness. Since the beans are already roasted, they do not need to be reheated before brewing. Now let’s take a look at the best methods for storing coffee and the ones you should avoid.

Best storage methods to keep it fresh

The best way to store coffee is to keep it as whole beans in a cool, dry place in an airtight container. Generally speaking, coffee beans can maintain a relatively fresh flavor. This is because the coffee grounds react with oxygen and lose flavor at a faster rate. Grinding coffee before brewing is the best way to preserve flavor.

Sealing the container prevents oxygen from damaging the coffee beans. The best airtight containers have a rubber seal around the rim and one or more latches. Containers with pop-up or screw-on lids may not block enough oxygen.

Where you store your coffee is just as important as where you store it. A dry, dark, cool place is best. Try placing it in a cabinet or pantry rather than on the counter to completely protect it from light. If you do need to use it on the counter, try using a dark container.

Keep in mind that even if you place your coffee in a dark storage container, heat will still affect it, so you won't want to store it on the stove or near an oven.

How long does coffee last in the refrigerator?

It's fairly common to put coffee in the refrigerator to maintain freshness. Unfortunately, it doesn't keep the coffee fresh and can cause it to go bad faster. The myth that refrigerators keep coffee fresh likely stems from the advice to keep it away from heat sources.

However, rapid temperature changes can cause condensation to form on the outside of the coffee beans. This allows moisture to accumulate on and inside the beans. Moisture can cause coffee beans to go bad within a few days. Because of these factors, it's best to keep your coffee at or slightly below room temperature. Additionally, coffee stored in the refrigerator can absorb the smells and flavors of surrounding foods.

How long does it take for coffee beans to go bad?

Now you know how to store coffee, but how long will it stay fresh using the best method? Unfortunately, it's hard to get a cup of coffee at its peak freshness. Coffee begins to lose its freshness immediately after roasting. The freshest coffee is after roasting and in the first few days afterwards. Check the roasting date on the coffee bag. As long as it is stored properly, unground coffee beans usually will not spoil in about 40 to 60 days. However, once ground into coffee powder, even if it is sealed and stored, the aroma will quickly dissipate within one to two weeks, so it must be consumed as soon as possible.
