Nowadays, the drinks on the menu in cafes are rich and diverse. In order to cater to more people's tastes, it is also very common to add various dairy products and flavored syrups to coffee. So have you ever heard of coffee with condensed milk?

Condensed milk is added to cover up the bitter taste in coffee

In Vietnam, the aroma of coffee wafts in the streets and alleys. Their coffee is mainly produced from Robusta beans, which are usually roasted until they are black and shiny. The extracted coffee liquid is rich in oil and has a flavor of hazelnut, grain, caramel, and obvious burnt bitterness. Compared with fresh milk from European countries, Vietnamese people prefer lactose-sweetened condensed milk, so they thought of using the sweetness of condensed milk to cover up the strong bitterness in coffee. The local people call this drink "ca phe sua da", which translates to Vietnamese drip coffee.

If we order a cup of Vietnamese drip coffee locally, the store will first put some milky white condensed milk into the cup, then put a drip filter pot on the cup, pour hot water, cover the lid, and then wait for the dark coffee liquid to drip naturally. The barista will also thoughtfully provide you with a small spoon to stir evenly before drinking. The sweetness of the condensed milk is perfectly balanced with the bitterness of the Luo Dou black coffee, resulting in a cup of milk coffee with the flavor of coffee and the sweetness of lactose.

In addition to Vietnam in Southeast Asia, Spain in Europe also has the drinking habit of "coffee + condensed milk". They like to call this coffee "Café Bombón". It's actually espresso with milk, presented in a mini cup.

Front Street has also reproduced this drink in a 90-120ml glass. The glass is for better appearance. Pour in the condensed milk at a ratio of 1:1 between espresso and condensed milk. For example, the espresso liquid used in Front Street is 40g, so the amount of condensed milk added is 40g. Then pour espresso on top of the condensed milk. Since the density of condensed milk is relatively high, it is difficult for espresso to blend with condensed milk without external force, forming a very beautiful "black and white combination". It tastes like "turtle paste with condensed milk" in the mouth. The taste is much thicker than pure espresso, and it is not bitter.

Of course, the two ways to drink "with condensed milk" are not limited to the above two. In recent years, a kind of "Spanish latte" with coffee + milk + condensed milk has also become a popular item on the menu in cafes. For example, coffee chain store Arabica has launched this popular coffee.

Is there a difference between a Spanish latte and a latte?

Spanish latte is composed of espresso, fresh milk and condensed milk. In other words, it is added with condensed milk on the basis of ordinary latte. The addition of condensed milk allows those who cannot tolerate the bitter taste to enjoy the rich aroma of coffee.

Now that you know the difference between Spanish latte and ordinary latte, making it is very simple. Front Street will first extract a cup of 40ml Espresso coffee liquid, add 10 grams of condensed milk to the base, stir thoroughly, then beat 200ml of fresh milk to a suitable temperature of 55 to 65 degrees Celsius, and finally blend it into the coffee liquid, and the Spanish latte is completed. If you want to make an iced Spanish latte, first add 75g of solid ice cubes into the cup, pour 200ml of iced milk, then add 10g of condensed milk to the extracted Espresso, pour it on the liquid surface, and stir evenly with a straw before tasting.

Because the espresso coffee produced at the Front Street store uses the "Sunflower Warm Blend" roasted in-house, it is a combination of Ethiopian sun-dried red cherry coffee beans (30%) + Honduran sherry barrel coffee beans (70%). The extracted Espresso coffee has flavors of vanilla, cream, whiskey, and berries. When paired with milk, it tastes like vanilla chocolate milk. Adding condensed milk highlights the sweetness of lactose and sucrose.

Stir before drinking, the taste is extremely mellow and silky! And you can’t taste the bitterness of coffee at all. Essentially, it is not much different from drip coffee. They both use condensed milk to temper the bitterness of coffee, but the type of coffee and the extraction method are different.

But not everyone can accept the sweetness of Café Bombón, so the Spanish latte was derived, using milk as a buffer to make the condensed milk less sweet. And because of the condensed milk, the whole latte has been upgraded to a certain extent, which can be said to complement each other.
