Speaking of milk coffee, the one that everyone may have been drinking is latte, and the more popular one in recent years is flat white, which is Australian white coffee. Australian white coffee is different from latte. It originated in Oceania. In fact, in addition to flat white, there is another milk coffee also from Australia. Today Front Street will introduce it to you!

What is a piccolo latte?

Piccolo latte originated in Australia and is said to be popular in Melbourne. The English name of Piccolo coffee "Piccolo" comes from Italian, meaning "small". Since it uses a single-serve Espresso, the top layer of coffee is covered with a thin layer of milk foam, and is served in a small transparent glass cup of about 100ml (normal latte cups are 200ml~300ml). Although it is called a "little latte", making a cup of Piccolo coffee is not as simple as a latte.

What is the difference between a piccolo and a latte?

Latte coffee originated in Italy, but it flourished in Seattle, Washington, USA in the 1980s. It followed the footsteps of an international brand and became popular around the world. The word Latte comes from Italian and means milk.

The difference between piccolo coffee and latteThe ratio of espresso liquid and milk in piccolo coffee is about 1:2, while in latte coffee it is about 1:6. Therefore, the taste of piccolo latte is richer than that of ordinary latte, but the capacity and calories are not so burdensome. For those who do not want to drink so much caffeine and milk, this is a great treasure.

What is the difference between Piccolo Coffee and Australian White Coffee Flat White?

Australian white coffee, like piccolo coffee, originated in Oceania. As for whether Australian white coffee originated in Australia or New Zealand, even though there are written records, both parties disagree.

Then,The difference between Piccolo coffee and Australian whiteWhat is it? For those who like to drink milk coffee,Australian white coffeeThe way it is done in Australia allows people to feel the taste of coffee in the milk, and the silky smoothness of the milk can also be found in the coffee. The ratio of flat white milk to milk foam in the cup. After the milk settles, the milk foam should be maintained at a thickness of 0.5cm.

Front Street found that for Australians, latte is coffee for people who like milk. If you want to "truly taste" the aroma of coffee beans and the perfect match with milk, the ratio of Flat White will be closer to the ideal. In addition to the most common Flat White, Australians also invented the Piccolo Latte, commonly known as the "little latte" for serious coffee lovers. The Piccolo is actually a smaller version of the full latte, which represents the same flavor and intensity of coffee. This may cause some confusion among customers when ordering in the store.

The difference in the taste of all milk coffees mostly depends on the amount of concentrated extraction, which means that the concentrated content is a crucial part. In a cup of latte, the espresso component is about one-tenth of the entire drink. There are about 30 to 40ml of espresso liquid in a 300ml cup.

This means that if we use the same 30ml standard single-serve concentrate to make a Piccolo Latte of only 100ml, the flavor of the espresso will be more obvious and rich.

Therefore, Piccolo Latte makes it easier to drink the flavor of the coffee beans themselves, and even the characteristics of soybeans. If you think the latte contains too much milk, but don’t like the concentrated and bitter flavor of the espresso liquid, Piccolo coffee may be your first choice. It is smooth in the mouth and has a moderate temperature. The temperature of about 55 to 60 degrees Celsius can bring out the sweetness of lactose in the milk. In addition, because the milk content is not much, you can drink the sweet aroma, richness and aftertaste of the coffee, and you will not feel full even if you drink the whole cup.

Front Street teaches you how to make a standard piccolo latte coffee

In order to give the piccolo latte a mellow and solid taste, Front Street classic Italian blended coffee beans are used here. It uses the classic "Mamba recipe", with Brazilian and Mandheling as the main notes, and then paired with a small amount of Robusta. The purpose is to allow everyone to extract the rich caramel coffee flavor and full coffee crema at home. Below, Front Street makes a cup of latte coffee and a cup of piccolo coffee respectively, and lets everyone find out the difference between the two.

After many debuggings, Front Street determined that 20g of coffee powder can extract 40g of coffee liquid in 28 seconds. The latte produced at FrontStreet Coffee stores uses a 300ml coffee cup, so pour 220g of milk and use a steam wand to whip it to 55 to 60 degrees Celsius. The thickness of the milk foam for latte coffee is moderate, about 0.5cm. After being whipped, the surface of the milk is shiny, bubble-free, and has a certain fluidity. Finally, just fuse the whipped milk with the espresso liquid for latte art.

Front Street uses a small cup of about 90 to 100ml to make piccolo, and preheats it in advance to ensure the drinking taste of the coffee. Then use a single shot of espresso (15-20ml) and 60ml of steamed milk with thin milk foam (less than 0.5cm). Except for the mini cup size, Piccolo coffee is not much different from a regular latte in structure. However, because the container is half smaller than the original, the difficulty of making it will undoubtedly be much higher than that of a latte.

Since they are all called "small latte", the standard latte art of hot latte is naturally indispensable, but the smaller cup shape means less space for the barista to draw. In line with the shrinkage of the entire cup of coffee, the barista whips only 60ml of milk in the milk vat into silky and dense milk foam, and evenly blends it with the coffee liquid, while still maintaining the exquisite appearance of conventional hot milk coffee. This is why the piccolo coffee we usually see in cafes almost always has simple patterns such as tulips, small leaves, and hearts.

It’s also milk coffee, so why is latte more famous than Australian white coffee and piccolo latte?

Front Street speculates that it has something to do with the flavor and the intensity of promotion. Latte coffee is gradually becoming known as Starbucks expands its market around the world. Secondly, compared with Australian milk coffee, latte coffee has a larger proportion of milk in a cup of coffee. The espresso liquid is too concentrated and the rich flavor is greatly diluted, making it easier to accept. As Australian white coffee and piccolo latte appear on more and more cafe menus, and more and more people drink them, more and more people will know about this type of milk coffee from Australia.
