Whether you are brewing coffee using a V60 filter cup or a coffee smart filter cup, they are both types of Pour over(V60) coffee. The definition of Pour over(V60) coffee is that after the coffee powder is dissolved in the water by injecting hot water, the extracted liquid drips out through the filter paper or filter at a free speed.

FrontStreet Coffee believes that the charm of Pour over(V60) coffee lies in its clean taste, its ability to fully extract the aroma and sweetness of coffee, and its ability to well control the excessive release of bitter substances.

V60 coffee filter cup features

V60 means that the coffee filter cup has a 60-degree angle, and the spiral rib design on the cup wall can effectively adjust the water flow to evenly pass through the coffee powder layer.

The star-chasing design of the filter cup focuses on the speed at which the water level drops, allowing the coffee powder particles to achieve better extraction and a faster flow rate. The internal ribs are designed with a curved vortex structure to help speed up the water flow, extending from the bottom to the top, indicating a smooth exhaust effect. The curved ribs increase the water flow path, increasing the contact time between coffee particles and water.

The coffee brewed by the V60 filter cup has a clean taste and rich layers.

What are the features of the Coffee Smart Cup?

The so-called "smart cup” is a funnel with a live valve embedded at the bottom. It is not affected by factors such as the water flow when brewing coffee, unlike the V60 filter cup. The smart cup can achieve the soaking effect before the piston is opened, and can more fully extract the substances in the coffee.

Although the extraction method is also soaked, it is different from the French press.smart cupAfter the extraction process is completed, the coffee oil and fine powder in the coffee liquid will first pass through the filter paper and then flow out through the open valve. The taste is cleaner and more layered than the French press with a metal mesh to "separate the residue".

smart cupIt combines the advantages of the French press and the conical/body-shaped coffee filter cup. It is simple, convenient and easy to use. It extracts by immersion and does not require much skill. If you find it difficult to master a stable water flow and cannot accept the fine powder of French press, then the smart cup is an easy-to-operate choice that can also take into account the flavor.

There is a piston at the bottom of the cup, and the middle is usually in a submerged state (there are four legs below, allowing it to stay suspended). After water is poured in, it is closed under pressure, and the piston firmly blocks the water flow. When it is placed on the container, the piston below is pushed up, and the coffee flows out.

The coffee brewed by the Coffee Smart Cup has a clean taste and is overall fuller than the V60 filter cup.

Which filter cup is more recommended for coffee novices??

In this case, we need to consider our own needs first. If you want to drink more layers and learn more about Pour over(V60) coffee, FrontStreet Coffee recommends choosing a V60 filter cup. If you want to drink stable and full coffee but find it difficult to control water injection, FrontStreet Coffee recommends choosing a smart cup.

V60What’s the difference between it and coffee brewed in a smart cup?

First choose freshly roasted coffee beans to have better aroma and flavor. Currently, all coffee beans sold on Front Street are shipped 5 days after roasting, and the best tasting period is 5-35 days after the roasting date is printed on the back label.

The two coffee filters use the same water temperature, coffee grinding size, and powder-to-water ratio. Taking the [Costa Rica Mozart coffee beans] sold by FrontStreet Coffee as an example, it is recommended to use medium-fine grinding (the size of fine sugar/China No. 20 standard sieve sieve rate 80%), a water temperature of 90-91 degrees Celsius, and a powder-to-water ratio of 1:15 (that is, 1g of coffee powder plus 15g of water). This time, FrontStreet Coffee will use 15g of coffee powder for a brewing demonstration.

The steps for brewing coffee in a smart cup are as follows: fold the filter paper and place it in the smart cup, place the smart cup on the container, and wet the filter paper with hot water to preheat the appliance at the same time. Then move the smart cup to the electronic scale (the valve will automatically close at this time), and pour the ground coffee into the center of the filter cup.

Inject 30g of hot water into the first section, press the timer, and steam for 30 seconds; after steaming, pour hot water to 225g, and then soak for 1'50". After soaking, move the smart cup to the container, open the valve, and filter out the coffee liquid in the filter cup. The whole process takes about 15 seconds, and the total coffee extraction time is 2'05'.

The V60 filter cup brewing steps are as follows: fold the filter paper and place it in the filter cup, then place it on the coffee pot, and then wet the filter paper with hot water to preheat the appliance at the same time. Then pour out the hot water from the pot and pour the ground coffee into the center of the filter cup.

Use 30g of water to fully moisten the powder layer and steam it in a "hamburger" shape for 30 seconds, and then proceed to the second stage of brewing; in the second stage, use medium-fine water to be injected in a steady circle to 125g and then stop. When the water level drops to 2/3 of the powder layer, pour into the third stage; in the third stage, continue to use medium-fine water to be injected in a circle to 225g and end the water injection. The total extraction time is about 2’00”.

V60 brews Mozart coffee, the flavor shows the sweetness of dried grapes, the aroma of osmanthus, the bright acidity like sweet orange, and the aftertaste like pineapple.
