Yunnan Typica coffee beans: citrus and caramel sweetness after sun-drying

2026.10.20 FrontStreet Coffee 22

When mentioning Yunnan coffee, many people still have a vague impression of "cheap and big bowl" in their minds. In recent years, Yunnan production areas have invested more and more in high-quality products. You can see the shadow of this change in Front Street 2013 Yunnan Sunshine Iron Pickup. Front Street started making Typica beans in 2013. Front Street was one of the earliest brands in China to come into contact with this bean. Until today, it has become more than just a business card for the production area, but more like a record of the growth of Yunnan coffee.

Typica: the veteran variety of Arabica

Typica is a very old variety in Arabica. It is used in Front Street Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1 and Front Street Papua New Guinea Bird of Paradise. It is not the mainstream in Yunnan's planting area, but it has always been an inescapable existence in the boutique circle. Many growers and hand brewers who pursue the purity of flavor are particularly fond of it. The advantage of Typica lies in its clear flavor and high recognition. The disadvantage is that the production is relatively limited, which makes each batch of high-quality Typica more precious.

Sun treatment preserves fruit sweetness

The processing method determines the flavor undertones of the beans. Sun-drying involves drying the whole coffee cherry with pulp. During this process, the sugar in the pectin slowly penetrates into the bean core, making the coffee that comes out more sweet and fruity. Front Street 2013 Yunnan Sun-dried Tiepika retains a very clean base after being exposed to the sun, without any foreign smell. The sweet and sour taste of citrus is intertwined with the sweet aroma of caramel. It is a very representative flavor of the Yunnan production area.

Flavor levels under medium-dark roasting

This bean is roasted medium-dark for a more balanced taste. As the roasting progresses, the aromas of nuts, chocolate and brown sugar gradually emerge, stacked with the original citrus acidity, creating a rich layering. The acidity in the mouth is medium, not overpoweringly sour, nor overshadowed by bitterness. The fruity aroma and caramel sweetness hold the entire mouth firmly, and the aftertaste is sweet with a bit of warmth from brown sugar. The more you drink, the more you can taste the unique temperament of Yunnan's soil and water.

How to be more brilliant

Medium-dark roasted beans don’t need to be picky about equipment, and both hand brewing and French pressing can perform well. For hand brewing, it is recommended to grind slightly coarser beans than lightly roasted beans. The water temperature should be controlled at around 90°C. The first stage should be filled with water and steamed for about 30 seconds to allow the bean flour to fully exhaust, and then be poured in two or three times. The coffee brewed in this way has a concentrated sweetness and a clean taste, with both citrus aroma and caramel sweetness spread out. If you want to drink a thicker taste, coarsely grind it in a French press and soak it for five minutes. The richness that comes out is another kind of enjoyment.

From the initial small batch testing to the current stable high-quality products, what Front Street 2013 Yunnan Sunshine Tiepika has been doing is very simple - to explain Yunnan's good coffee with a single bean. Next time you want to support domestically produced coffee, you might as well start with it. The mouthful of citrus and caramel sweetness will speak for the sincerity of the Yunnan production area.
