Because Blue Mountain Coffee was so famous in the last century, many related "edge" products appeared on the market at that time. For example, Blue Mountain flavored coffee, Blue Mountain blended coffee, etc. They are almost all products that have nothing to do with Blue Mountain and purely rely on the name of Blue Mountain to make profits.

Yesterday, a customer asked Front Street such a question when buying beans. He asked Front Street whether Papua coffee, known as the "Little Blue Mountain", also belongs to this type of product?

Eh! It really isn't.Papua New GuineaCoffee’s nickname of “Little Blue Mountain” is not unfounded. Front Street has also been shared several times. It doesn’t matter, today Front Street will share again why Papua New Guinea’s coffee is called “Little Blue Mountain”.

same variety

First it’s the same coffee variety! Most of the coffee grown in Papua is of the same variety as Blue Mountain coffee, Typica.

The cultivation of coffee in Papua can be traced back to the end of the 19th century. Dutch sailors planted introduced coffee saplings in the Rigo District of Papua. From that time on, coffee took root in Papua. At the beginning of the 20th century, coffee in Papua officially began the process of commercialization. Although it started relatively late, because the environment was very suitable for growing coffee, by 1908, Papua already had 180 acres of land planted with coffee.

In 1931, in order to further improve the quality of coffee, Papua introduced Typica from Jamaica. As we all know, the variety of Blue Mountain coffee is Typica, and this Typica is different from regular Typica.

The coffee-producing area of Jamaica is different from other coffee-producing areas. It is a relatively closed island country and has unique microclimate conditions. Therefore, the Typica grown there has evolved relatively excellent disease resistance after more than two hundred years of domestication and adaptation! especially for coffeeFruit rot diseaseThe resistance will be higher than that of ordinary iron pickups, and the quality and output will be relatively better. Therefore, Typica grown in Jamaica has a unique name--Blue Mountain Tiepica。

In order to improve the quality of coffee, many producing areas have introduced Blue Mountain Typica from Jamaica, and Papua is one of them. This is one of the reasons why Papua’s coffee is known as the Little Blue Mountain, as most of the coffee grown there is of the same origin as Blue Mountain coffee.

Close planting environment

Of course, variety alone is not enough to support the title of "Little Blue Mountain"! Many other production areas have also introduced Blue Mountain Typica from Jamaica, but Papua is different from them in that it can provide coffee with a growing environment close to that of Jamaica.

Like Jamaica, Papua New Guinea is an island country. It is located between the equator and 10 degrees south latitude. It is also a tropical area with high humidity and abundant rainfall. Not only that, it has a high altitude for coffee cultivation and volcanic soil that can breed more flavor substances in coffee. It can be said to be an excellent coffee cultivation environment. Because of this, Typica grown in Papua has a performance that is relatively close to that of the Blue Mountains compared to other production areas.

Of course, there are still certain differences in the actual taste. Papua coffee still has its own charm unique to this production area. After conducting many cupping tests, Front Street finally chose the cup fromSikri ManorBird of Paradise coffee, as the representative of Papua New Guinea coffee in the bean list.

Papua New Guinea bird of paradise

Sikri Manor was established in 1950, more than 70 years ago. It is a pioneer in the local coffee industry, and it is also one of the earliest Papua manor coffees introduced into the country. 「bird of paradise coffee"At the earliest, it referred to the Sikri Manor coffee with Papua's national bird, the bird of paradise, printed on the sack. However, more and more Papua coffee was introduced into the country later, and the bird of paradise was printed on the sacks, so the bird of paradise coffee became a general term, but at first it only referred to the coffee of the Sikri Manor. This is one of the reasons why Front Street chose this estate to represent Papua.

图片

Why do you say one? Because having a story is not enough, the quality of the coffee cannot be compromised either, and the coffee from Sikri Manor just meets this requirement.

Sigri Manor is located in the Western Highlands Province(Western Highlands)Wagyi Valley(Waghi Valley), which has mineral-rich volcanic soil, an altitude of about 1,500 meters, a cool climate, and abundant rainfall. It is a fertile land in Papua that is very suitable for growing coffee.

图片

Not only that, Sikri Manor also attaches great importance to protecting the ecological environment. In order not to damage and pollute the land and water sources, Sikri Manor does not use any pesticides and insecticides when growing coffee. In the post-processing, Sikri Manor is not ambiguous at all. In order to produce high-quality coffee, every step from harvesting to processing is very meticulous. Because of this, the quality of its coffee is excellent, which is the ultimate reason to choose it on Front Street.

Front Street chose a medium roast curve to cook this Bird of Paradise coffee from Sigley Estate, in order to give the coffee a balanced expression. Under moderate roasting, the taste of Bird of Paradise coffee is very balanced, with a smooth and mellow taste. In addition to the unique flavors of dark roasted coffee such as chocolate and nuts, the flavor also has a very soft citrus and berry acidity, and the aftertaste is the sweetness of sugar cane. The overall flavor is close to that of Blue Mountain but has its own charm. It is really good!
