As a handsome boy and girl living in a city that is like a stove, cold drinks are a must-have in the refrigerator. Cold brew coffee can not only satisfy the desire of handsome boys and girls for cold drinks, but also satisfy their pursuit of caffeine. However, cold brew coffee bought from outside is expensive! The money for three cups of cold brew coffee is enough to buy a bag of beans. A half-pound bag of coffee beans is enough to make four cold brew coffees, each time is 500 ml. Next, Front Street will teach you how to save money and make cold brew coffee at home.
Cold brew coffee is actually divided into cold water immersion type and ice water drip type. Simply put, it is cold brew coffee and ice drip coffee. The only cold brew coffee produced by FrontStreet Coffee stores is iced drip coffee, so let’s start with iced drip coffee!
Friends who have been to the FrontStreet Coffee store know that the FrontStreet store has a complete set of equipment for making iced coffee. When assembled, it looks like a tower, which looks very handsome. When explaining how to do it next, Front Street believes that handsome is not enough to describe it, it must be professional!

How FrontStreet Coffee makes iced drip coffee:
Front Street uses 60 grams of coffee powder as a benchmark, uses a Chinese standard No. 20 sieve to filter about 85% of the grinding degree, and uses a powder to water ratio of 1:10 to extract about 600 ml of coffee liquid in 6 to 8 hours.
1. Put round filter paper on the bottom of the powder cup and moisten it with water.

2. Put 60 grams of ground coffee powder into a powder cup, and press it with a heavy object similar to a powder hammer to make the surface of the coffee powder smooth and the inside compact.

3. Put a circular filter paper on the surface of the coffee powder to avoid powder pits caused by long-term dripping of water.

4. Add cold water to pre-soak.

5. Put a 1:1 mixture of ice and water into the water container.

6. Adjust the throttle valve to 7 drops of water in 10 seconds.

7. Wait 6 to 8 hours for the coffee liquid to be extracted, pour it into an empty bottle, seal it and refrigerate it overnight.
The characteristic of ice-drip coffee is that it tastes more fragrant and smooth, showing the best original flavor of coffee. Many coffee lovers like ice-drip coffee very much. In this weather where you feel tired of eating anything, Front Street will use some coffee beans with a more sour taste to make ice-drip coffee. For example, the beans from Kenyan Cherry Tomatoes on Front Street are a good choice.

Front Street Kenyan Cherry Tomato Coffee Beans
Country: Kenya
Origin: Thika
Altitude: 1550m~750m
Variety: SL28, SL34
Treatment method: K72 water washing treatment
This Kenyan coffee bean from Front Street makes iced drip coffee with a clean flavor and bright acidity. It tastes like fruit juice, with an obvious sour cherry tomato aroma in the mouth, a grapefruit peel flavor in the middle, and a berry aroma and caramel sweetness in the aftertaste.
cold brew coffee
Front Street here also understands that it is impossible for friends to have space in their homes to put such a large device, so cold brew coffee is the easiest for the public.Generally speaking, if you want to make cold brew coffee, you still need to grind the coffee beans. This kind of work can be handed over directly to the merchant when you buy the coffee beans. This not only eliminates the need to adjust the grinding degree, but also saves the time of weighing the beans and grinding the powder. If you want to make the preparation steps more convenient, Front Street recommends that you buy some special tea bags. In this way, you only need to put the coffee powder into knots in advance, and then take them out and use them directly when making cold brew.

1. Place the cold brew coffee bag into the extraction container and take out the lanyard.
2. Add 100 ml of room temperature water or cold water into the container (the recommended powder to water ratio is 1:10, the powder to water ratio can be adjusted according to your personal preference).
3. Shake it to fully moisten the coffee powder in the cold brew coffee bag.
4. Place in the refrigerator for 8 to 12 hours.
Take out the cold brew coffee bag after 5.8 to 12 hours.
6. Shake well and enjoy.
How long should cold brew coffee be steeped?
As early as two years ago, FrontStreet Coffee conducted experiments on how the length of cold brewing coffee affects its flavor. When using the same coffee beans, the same grinding degree, and the same ratio of powder to water, and setting the extraction time to [4 hours], [8 hours], [12 hours] and [24 hours], the conclusions are as follows:

The overall taste of [4 hours] is relatively thin and the aroma is sufficient. However, after filtered coffee grounds are bottled and refrigerated for fermentation, the aroma is much weakened. The extraction rate is the lowest among the four groups, and the extracted flavor is incomplete.
The flavor of [8 hours] is relatively fresh and clean, and the extracted flavor is more than that of the [4 hours] group. However, due to the shorter extraction time, the layering of flavors is not rich, and the overall feeling is average.
[12 hours] The flavor is rich in layers and more complex than the previous two groups. Some inert molecules in the coffee beans can be extracted into the coffee liquid in small amounts.
[24 hours] has the most complex and rich flavor. Due to the long soaking time, the ingredients in the coffee beans are fully extracted, and the water saturation is also the highest among the four groups.

As the extraction time increases, the richness and bitterness of the final coffee extract become more obvious; as the extraction time shortens, the acidity of the coffee extract becomes more obvious; and after the extracted coffee liquid was refrigerated and fermented for a day, it was found that the group with a soaking time of [12 hours] was the best choice, because even after fermentation, the flavor was still good.
But these are just reference data shared by Front Street, and they need to be adjusted according to personal taste and the flavor status of the coffee beans.
Should cold brew coffee be brewed at room temperature or in the refrigerator?
Friends who often read FrontStreet Coffee articles know that subtle changes in water temperature will have a certain impact on coffee. The most commonly seen is: the lower the temperature of the water, the slower the coffee extraction rate, and the longer it takes to achieve the ideal extraction rate. However, as the extraction time increases, more substances are extracted from the coffee, and some substances with bad flavor will also be extracted into the coffee liquid.

Hand-brewed coffee and ice-drip coffee are two extreme and obvious examples.
Because the water temperature used for Pour over(V60) coffee is nearly boiling hot water (light roasted and medium roasted coffee beans use a water temperature of 90 to 93 degrees, while dark roasted coffee beans use a water temperature of 86 to 88 degrees), so the baristas of FrontStreet Coffee generally control the entire extraction time to about 2 minutes for Pour over(V60) coffee.
Ice-drip coffee uses a mixture of ice and water. We are taught in junior high school physics books that the reference temperature of the ice-water mixture is 0 degrees. Without taking into account the increase in temperature caused by the heat energy absorbed by the ice water dripping down, ideally speaking, the water temperature of ice-drip coffee is 0 degrees. Baristas at FrontStreet Coffee stores will prepare ice-drip coffee when they first go to work. When they are about to get off work, they will bottle the extracted coffee liquid and seal it and refrigerate it. The whole process takes approximately 6 to 8 hours.
Plus, cold brew coffee literally means cold brew coffee is best soaked in the refrigerator.
