The history of the French Press can be traced back many years, but there is a lot of controversy over who actually invented the French Press. The first patent in history for a coffee brewing device similar to a modern French press was awarded to a Milanese named Attilio Callimani.

Since it is a French press, why is the patent grantor not French? Some rumors say that the French press came about when a man from France installed a filter on the coffee pot to isolate the coffee grounds and get a cleaner cup of coffee. This coffee brewing equipment was widely used in various regions of France around the 19th century, and eventually spread to other countries.

When the French press was introduced to Italy, Callimani made subtle adjustments to the coffee brewing device and applied for a patent. The French press is just one of eight patents related to beverage production that Callimani has obtained.

Today's French press pots are mostly made of borosilicate glass. They are durable, reliable and reasonably priced. In addition, they are simple and easy to use. They are the mother-like choice for many first-time specialty coffee lovers.

What is the principle of French press? What's so special about coffee made with a French press?

To make coffee with a French press, the coffee powder is completely soaked in the pot, and then a press bar with a metal filter is used to separate the coffee and coffee grounds. This brewing method produces a very rich coffee, which can increase texture and oil, and the final coffee is also quite clean.

Although the steps for brewing coffee with a French press are simple, there are still some things to pay attention to. Since the coffee made by the French press is mainly steeped, the grinding level will be coarser than that of Pour over(V60) coffee. If the grinding degree is too fine, or there are too many fine powders, the metal filter will not be able to filter the coffee grounds, and the coffee will have an unpleasant "ground feel" when you drink it, which will greatly affect the taste.

In addition, before brewing coffee with a French press, just like brewing tea, you need to preheat the glass kettle with hot water. If you do not perform the preheating action, when the hot water enters the kettle, the water temperature will drop faster.

inPink to water ratioIn terms of choice, the more common one is between 1:13 and 1:15, which can be adjusted according to your own taste. The brewing water temperature will also vary according to the degree of roasting of the coffee beans. For medium-light and medium-roasted coffee beans, Front Street recommends using a water temperature of 90 degrees Celsius to 93 degrees Celsius. Use higher water temperatures to remove the aromatic substances in lightly roasted coffee beans and High-quality acid is extracted; while medium-dark roasted coffee beans use water temperatures of 86 degrees Celsius to 88 degrees Celsius. Since dark-roasted coffee beans absorb water more efficiently and dissolve flavors faster, if the water temperature is too high, a bitter and burnt taste will easily occur.

Next, FrontStreet Coffee demonstrated using Oiran coffee from Ethiopia. As usual, Front Street will introduce this coffee bean to you:

Front Street Oiran coffee beans are produced in the Hambera seed production area under Sidamo Guji. The Guji production area is a common winner in many coffee bean competitions. The Hambera sub-producing area is the coffee sub-producing area with the highest planting altitude among Ethiopian producing countries. It is only separated from Kocher in the Yirgacheffe producing area by a high mountain.

In 2017, Ethiopia's DW Company sent this sun-dried coffee beans from the Buku Abel Processing Station in Hambera to participate in the East African Green Bean Competition, and won the 2017 TOH Ethiopia Division sun-dried coffee beans championship. Later, Hongshun, a Beijing green bean merchant, introduced the same batch of coffee beans into the country and named it "Oiran", which means the head of a hundred flowers and has high hopes.

First preheat the French press with warm water, then pour out the warm water, add 15 grams of ground coffee powder, and then inject 225 grams of hot water at 91 degrees Celsius. The water injection range can be slightly larger to allow the coffee powder to tumble to improve extraction efficiency. You can also stir it gently with a spoon. After the water filling is completed, pull up the metal filter and cover it, and wait for 4 minutes. After 4 minutes, gently press the filter rod to 1/4 of the pot body. Finally, pour out the coffee liquid and enjoy.
