When many customers come to Qian Street to drink coffee, they will discuss whether there is any difference in taste between iced drip coffee and cold brew coffee. Both of these are common methods of cold brewing coffee, but they have different production methods and flavor expressions. Let’s introduce the characteristics and differences between ice dripping and cold brewing in detail below!

Simply put, iced drip coffee is drip extraction, while cold brew coffee is immersion extraction.

Iced coffee is a method of using ice water to penetrate the coffee powder layer drop by drop to extract the fragrant coffee substance. The process is relatively long and requires professional ice-dropping equipment. The general parameters for making ice-drip coffee in Front Street are: 60 grams of powder, finer grinding than manual grinding, 85% passing rate of No. 20 mesh, and a dripping speed of 7 drops in 10 seconds. It takes about 6 hours to make 600 ml of ice-drip coffee. The dripped coffee liquid should be stored in the refrigerator for 12 hours before drinking.

Many friends asked Front Street how much water and how much ice should be added? Regarding this problem, Front Street said that as long as it is a mixture of ice and water throughout the process, it will be enough. Because we adopt the method of ending the extraction when the target amount of coffee liquid is reached, the excess ice water in the pot will not affect the coffee liquid.

Cold brew coffee is also called cold brew coffee. As the name suggests, cold water is used to soak the coffee to extract it. The production method recommended by Front Street is a powder to water ratio of 1:12, the coffee grinding is also slightly finer than hand brewing, and the No. 20 sieve pass rate is 85%. Put the coffee powder into a sealed bottle, add 12 parts of water, shake evenly and put it in the refrigerator for 12 hours. Then use a filter to filter the coffee grounds. Place the clean coffee liquid in the refrigerator for 4 hours before drinking.

Because of the difference in cooking methods, their appearance and flavor are also different. Ice-drip coffee will appear clearer and more translucent.

In terms of flavor, the performance of the same coffee beans is also different. Ice-drip coffee that has been fermented overnight will have a stronger fermented flavor and will taste more refreshing and fermented. Cold brew coffee has more of the flavor of the coffee beans themselves (for example, fruit-flavored coffee beans can retain rich fruity flavor) and has a more mellow taste.

We also use a lightly roasted Front Street washed Yirgacheffe to make iced drip coffee and cold brew coffee respectively. Their flavor expressions are as follows:

Ice drop flavor: Refreshing, clean taste, rich fermentation flavor, with some wine flavor. Slightly sweet and sour berry flavor.
Cold brew flavor: The taste is relatively full, the flavor is relatively uniform, and the sweetness of the fruit is very obvious. The fermentation feeling is not very strong.

Ice drip coffee and cold brew coffee have their own differences in performance. If you want to try the iced coffee flavor expression of coffee beans, you can try cold brew coffee. If you want to try the unique flavor expressed in the production method, you might as well try iced drip coffee.
