As a hot-selling product in coffee shops, American coffee can be said to be the number one!
One is because it is fast to make, cost-effective and contains caffeine, so it is very popular among office workers; the other is that most Americano coffee uses Italian-style blended coffee beans, so it is easy to stabilize the quality of the product; the other is that the flavor of Americano coffee beans is often more balanced and is highly accepted by mass consumers; the other is that Americano coffee is black coffee, and without the addition of milk, sugar or other ingredients, moderate intake can achieve the effect of digestion and fatigue.

what isAmericano?
When many friends hear the word black coffee, they always think of Americano coffee immediately. Although Americano is a member of the black coffee family, it does not mean that the only member of the black coffee family is Americano. Any coffee made without adding any materials/auxiliary materials, with only coffee beans and water, can be called drinking coffee.
And a standard cupAmericano, must be made from espresso mixed with water.

The English name of American coffee is Americano. According to the definition of Cambridge Dictionary, it is: a type of coffee drink made by adding hot water to espresso coffee. Among them, hot water is added to espresso coffee (espresso), which is Americano. Simply put, espresso coffee diluted with water is Americano coffee.
AmericanoDid it originate in the United States?
The origin of American coffee is in Italy. Rumor has it that during World War II, American soldiers in Italy could not drink the strong and strong espresso there, so they added the pressurized espresso liquid to hot water and diluted it for drinking.
This is also one of the most convincing origins at present. After all, in that era when everyone still had requirements for the quality of coffee beans and the pursuit of coffee flavor, the taste of espresso was not satisfactory.

But at that time, the working people of Italy were in urgent need of a quick and refreshing drink that could stimulate their physical skills during their breaks. Therefore, a pressurized steam coffee machine was invented, which can quickly extract a small amount of coffee with a strong taste.
Recommended American coffee beans
To make Americano/espresso, FrontStreet Coffee recommends that you use coffee beans specially blended for espresso. The reasons why blending coffee beans are recommended are, firstly, because the cost is lower, and secondly, because the coffee beans used in the blending have complementary effects and can balance and stabilize the flavor of each cup of coffee beans. Secondly, most blended coffee beans are roasted to a medium-deep degree, so that the sour and thin coffee flavor is less likely to appear after extraction.

Currently, there are four Italian blends of coffee beans sold on Front Street.
"FrontStreet Coffee - Nuanyang blended coffee beans": Ethiopian sun-dried red cherry coffee beans (30%) + Honduras sherry barrel coffee beans (70%), with a rich aroma of wine, vanilla cream, sweet and sour berries, and the flavor of roasted nuts.
"FrontStreet Coffee-FrontStreet Blend 100% Arabica Coffee Beans": Colombian washed coffee beans (30%) + Brazilian semi-sun-dried coffee beans (70%), with nutty, dark chocolate, and caramel flavors.

"FrontStreet Coffee-FrontStreet Commercial Blend Coffee Beans": Robusta washed coffee beans (10%) + Colombian washed coffee beans (30%) + Brazilian semi-dried coffee (60%), with flavors of nuts, cocoa, and caramel.
"FrontStreet Coffee-FrontStreet Black Cocoa Blend (100% Arabica) Coffee Beans": Yunnan washed arabica coffee beans (30%) + Brazilian semi-sun-dried coffee beans (70%), with soft acidic, caramel, and nutty flavors.
Of course, you can also use single-origin coffee beans for espresso extraction (SOE). However, it should be noted that not every single-origin coffee is suitable. Many single-origin beans that taste good in cupping, hand brewing, and ice-drip cold extraction are prone to excessive flavor amplification when extracted in extremely fine grinding and pressurized environments.

For example, FrontStreet Coffee currently sells lightly roasted Ethiopian diced coffee beans, which are extracted through drip filtering/steeping. The coffee flavor shows bright citrus acidity, white floral aroma, and the sweetness of honey green tea. When the espresso machine pressurizes the coffee, the coffee flavor will become sour, thin, and prone to astringency.
So if you want to make SOE, you can choose single-origin coffee beans customized specifically for SOE, or choose coffee beans roasted to medium or above.

Making espresso
AmericanoThe soul lies in the making of Italian coffee. The performance of every coffee machine and grinder is different, so there is no standard answer to the parameters for making espresso, and everyone needs to adjust it according to the actual situation.

If you are extracting espresso for the first time, FrontStreet Coffee recommends that you use the following parameters as an intermediate value (20g of coffee powder to extract 40g of coffee liquid, time 25-30 seconds), and then judge by tasting whether the intensity/flavor of the espresso is within your expected range, and then adjust the parameters.
American coffee making proportions
Take the production method of FrontStreet Coffee store as an example. FrontStreet Coffee store uses Sunflower Warm Sun blended coffee beans as the beans for espresso. The barista has to adjust the beans according to the state of the beans every day. In order to highlight the taste of sherry barrels, they chose an extraction plan of 20 grams of coffee beans, extracting 40 grams of coffee liquid, and a time of 27 to 28 seconds.

Front Street once determined the American-style water-to-water ratio for this bean. Using the above-mentioned extraction method, after two rounds of range shrinkage, we finally made 1:4, 1:4.5, and 1:5 respectively, making a three-cup coffee for comparison. The ratio of 1:4.5 was finally determined. In this ratio, the wine aroma of Nuanyang blend and the flavors of vanilla and chocolate can be better highlighted without losing the taste.
However, this ratio is only suitable for "Front Street Sunflower Warm Sun Blended Coffee Beans". It is not suitable for making other series of Italian blended coffee beans from FrontStreet Coffee. It will be relatively strong and the extraction parameters of espresso also need to be adjusted. When the ratio of American coffee is difficult to control, it is recommended to start with 1:5. If the coffee is too strong, increase the ratio of water. If the coffee is too weak, just reduce the ratio of water.
