With the popularity of specialty coffee culture, more and more friends are falling in love with the pure flavor and taste of coffee. Coffee shops will also provide you with a variety of black coffee with different extraction methods, such as Americano, Pour over(V60) coffee, cold brewed coffee, iced drip coffee, etc., and the prices will also vary. Especially iced drip coffee, the price is always much higher than other iced coffees! Is this because the name sounds better? Of course not, it’s more because the production process takes a long time and requires constant attention.

What is iced drip coffee? Why is iced drip coffee so expensive? !

Different from other iced coffee, iced drip coffee is extracted using ice water through drip filtering. Due to the need for drip filtering, when making iced coffee, you need to use a special iced drip coffee pot. The price of a durable iced drip coffee pot is usually a bit high. Compared with cold brew coffee that only requires a clean sealed container to make, iced drip coffee has added an additional cost in terms of equipment (facepalm. jpg). The high price is not only due to the equipment, but also because of the long production time, which varies depending on the pot and the amount. Usually the production time is 4-12 hours, and the amount produced each time is not much, but it is really delicious! ! !

What’s so special about iced drip coffee?

The most attractive part of ice-drip coffee is that because it uses low-temperature extraction, the astringent substances in the coffee are not easily dissolved, and it uses drip filtering. The coffee liquid is filtered through a filter/filter paper layer before dripping. Therefore, no matter what coffee beans are used to make it, ice-drip coffee will have a rich and round taste that is strong but not astringent, mellow but not bitter. It is very suitable for friends who like to drink high-mellow drinks but are worried about bitterness.

Structure of ice drip coffee maker

There are currently two types of ice-drip coffee pots on the market, one is an ice pot + powder cup + coffee pot, and the other is an ice pot + powder cup + snake tube + coffee pot. FrontStreet Coffee uses the latter to make ice-drip coffee on a daily basis. Generally, you can choose the former when making ice-drip coffee at home. The difference between having a snake tube and not having a snake tube is that the snake tube can further precipitate and extract the tiny particles (powder texture) in the coffee liquid, and the final taste of the coffee will be cleaner ~

A curling jug is a container containing a mixture of ice and water, but with a small hole that controls the speed at which the water falls. Some curling kettles have valve adjustments, and you can adjust the speed at which the water drops according to your own needs. FrontStreet Coffee recommends that when making daily ice-drip coffee, the water dripping speed is about 7-8 drops per 10 seconds. During the production process, you must always pay attention to whether the dripping water will be blocked by small impurities in the water. You must also pay attention to the dissolution of ice cubes and add ice in time to ensure that the water that drops is ice water.

A powder cup is a container that holds ground coffee. There are two types. One requires additional round filter paper at the bottom, and the other comes with its own filter. If you need to put filter paper, you need to first put in a piece of filter paper and moisten it with water, then use a device to fit the filter paper to the filter cup and then put a dry round filter paper to increase the supporting force and prevent the first filter paper from being tilted after the coffee powder is poured in, thereby losing the filtering effect.

Regardless of the type, after pouring in the coffee powder, you need to smooth the surface of the powder layer as flat as possible (not compact it), and then lay a circular filter paper on the surface to distribute the water flow and avoid uneven extraction of the powder layer particles. For the grinding of ice-drip coffee powder, FrontStreet Coffee recommends using medium-fine grinding for light-medium roasted coffee beans (the size of fine sugar/75% sieving rate of China No. 20 standard sieve), and medium-to-medium grinding for medium-dark roasted coffee beans (70% sieving rate of white sugar size/China No. 20 standard sieve).

The coffee pot is where the extracted coffee liquid is stored. Keep the coffee pot as clean and oil-free as possible, and keep the pot at room temperature when using it.

FrontStreet Coffee (FrontStreet Coffee) Ice Drip Coffee Making Sharing

1. The water to powder ratio used in FrontStreet Coffee ice drip is 1:10, that is, 60 grams of coffee powder extracts 600 ml of coffee liquid.

2. Place a piece of circular filter paper at the bottom of the coffee cup, wet it with water and fit it to the wall of the cup. Add 60g of ground coffee powder (the size of coarse sugar), and then smooth the surface of the coffee. You can also use the weight of the powder hammer to lightly press the powder layer to make the surface smooth.

3. Remember to put a piece of filter paper on the noodles. Because the tension of the filter paper can make the water evenly distributed, if there is no filter paper, long-term water droplets will make a pit in the powder bed.

4. Use ice water to "pre-soak". In fact, this is similar to the steaming process in hand brewing, which can improve the extraction effect and the consistency of the finished product. Direct ice dripping may cause the powder layer to be unevenly moistened. Some of the coffee powder will be over-extracted while other parts of the coffee powder will not participate in the extraction.

5. Put a 1:1 mixture of ice and water into the water bottle, and adjust the regulating valve for about 10 seconds to make 7 drops of water.

6. After making, pour the coffee liquid into a sealed glass bottle and put it in the refrigerator to ferment overnight. This will allow the flavors of the coffee to blend together, making it taste better and easier to drink.

Recommended iced drip coffee beans

Because low-temperature extraction is more difficult to extract mellow substances, FrontStreet Coffee recommends using coffee beans with sour and sweet flavors. For example, lighter roasted coffee beans from Africa and Central and South America: Ethiopia sold by FrontStreet CoffeeOiran coffee beans(berry juice flavor),Panama Flower Butterfly Gesha Natural Blend Coffee Bean(scented tea),Costa Rica Mozart coffee beans(preserved fruit tone) are very suitable for making cold brew coffee.
