Front Street noticed that on the road to self-study about coffee, what sometimes bothered people was not the complicated techniques or parameters, but whenever they searched for a professional term, a large number of related words that looked similar but had different meanings in Chinese were always found, confusing people. For example, cold brew, the iced coffee that dominates the entire summer, will inevitably pop up with several "aliases" if you search on the Internet, including ice drip, ice brew, cold brew, Dutch coffee, Kyoto coffee... For a while, I really can't tell who is who.
Among them, ice-brew coffee is undoubtedly the most vaguely defined concept. Some people think that ice-brew is cold brew, some think that ice-brew should refer to ice dripping, and others understand it as the method of soaking coffee powder with a mixture of ice and water. Don’t worry, let’s start with the category of cold brew coffee~

We all know that the term "cold brew coffee" is literally translated from "Cold brew coffee", and its popularity is due to the expansion and marketing of Starbucks. When you expand this name appropriately, you will find that in fact, all black coffee extracted with cold (water) can be classified as "cold brew coffee". In other words, no matter whether it is soaked, filtered or injected, as long as it is a liquid obtained by contacting coffee powder with low-temperature cold water, it is theoretically considered a cold brew coffee.
However, since the concept of cold brew tea has long existed in Chinese, in most cases, what people call "cold brew coffee" refers to coffee soaked in cold water for a long time, that is, cold brew coffee. The common method is to soak the coffee powder with room temperature water, put it in the refrigerator for a few hours, and then isolate the coffee grounds.

As a typical immersion extraction method, cold brew coffee is simple and convenient to make, with a wide variety of coffee bean types and a low turnover rate. Therefore, in addition to being a "permanent player" in coffee shops, it is also one of the most popular products on the home-made coffee list.
Another common low-temperature extraction is the drip filter method, which is a long-term extraction process by controlling the melting ice-water mixture to penetrate into the coffee powder drop by drop, that is, ice dripping. In many English textbooks, ice drip is usually not called "Ice Drip Coffee", but called Dutch Coffee, so it is often translated as "Dutch Coffee".

Rumor has it that around the 17th century, Dutch sailors tried soaking coffee powder in cold water during a long sea voyage. They finally discovered that the coffee produced in this way was not bitter and was easy to store and transport for a long time. Later, the Dutch introduced this cold drink method to Japan in the Edo period through trade, and it was very popular, hence the name: Dutch Coffee.
Although it is difficult to determine whether the above story is true, what is certain is that the cool drip filter device designed with several layers in the coffee shop that you see today was invented by the Japanese, and the iced drip coffee made with it also became popular in Japan.

Later, as well-known Japanese appliance brands such as HARIO, KINTO, and Kalita developed the now-familiar cold brew bottles and ice drippers, this type of low-temperature-extracted black coffee became widely spread throughout Japan. Until the rise of the third wave of coffee, this cool-looking coffee device began to be introduced to Europe, so it was also called Kyoto Coffee by Westerners.

Compared with cold brew and ice brew, the word "ice brew" rarely appears in domestic cafes. Front Street has not been able to find a specific origin, and everyone's interpretation of it is even different. Regarding ice brewed coffee, we can understand it as an elegant translation of "Cold Brew", which can almost be equivalent to the meaning of cold brew coffee.
From Front Street’s point of view, ice-brewed coffee mainly highlights the word “brew”, whose original meaning is to make wine and brew, and is related to wine. In our coffee process, whether it is ice dripping or cold brewing, after the production is completed, it needs to be sealed in a tank for brewing. After several hours or a day or two of maturation, the soluble flavor substances will further merge with water and gradually evolve into a fermented taste like fine wine.

Therefore, whether it is ice drip or cold brew, as long as the black coffee is obtained after the storage and brewing process, Front Street believes that it can be understood as "ice brewed coffee".
