A moka pot is a coffee appliance that is very close to an espresso machine and can produce fragrant and creamy coffee. A favorite among Italian families. But for us, Moka pots are rarely accessible, so FrontStreet Coffee shares some knowledge about Moka pots.
The Mocha was invented by Italian Alfanso Bialetti in 1933. It brews coffee by heating the base. It is a distillation type. It is the most popular machine for brewing Italian coffee and is commonly used in Italian families.
How to make coffee with a moka pot?
moka potIt is divided into three parts: the upper pot, the powder trough, and the lower seat. The lower pot is a sink that holds water, the powder trough is used to hold finer ground coffee powder, and the upper pot is used to hold the extracted coffee liquid. The principle of coffee extraction in a Moka pot is very simple. It uses the steam pressure generated in the lower pot. When the steam pressure is large enough to penetrate the coffee powder, it will push the hot water to the upper pot and brew rich coffee.

Utensils required include: Moka pot, gas stove and stove or induction cooker, coffee beans, grinder and water.
1. Pour pure water into the lower pot of the Moka pot until the water level is about 0.5cm below the pressure relief valve.

2. The coffee grinding degree should be slightly coarser than that of Italian coffee. You can refer to the size of the gap in the powder trough filter to ensure that the coffee particles will not fall into the pot. Slowly pour the coffee powder into the powder trough, tap gently to distribute the coffee powder evenly, and smooth the surface of the coffee by spreading the powder into a small hill-like shape.

Filling the powder trough is to avoid extracting undesirable imperfect flavors. Because when the density of the coffee powder in the powder trough is closer, it will avoid over-extraction or under-extraction of some coffee powder, resulting in uneven flavor or bitterness.
3. Put the powder trough into the lower pot, then tighten the upper and lower parts of the Moka pot, wipe the base with a dry rag, and then heat it on an electric ceramic stove over high heat;

4. When the Moka pot heats up to a certain temperature, and when the Moka pot makes a distinct "whining" sound, set the electric ceramic stove to low heat and open the lid of the pot.

5. When the coffee liquid in the pot is halfway out, turn off the electric ceramic stove. The residual heat and pressure of the Moka pot will "push" the remaining coffee liquid into the upper pot.

6. When all the coffee liquid is extracted into the pot, you can pour it into a cup and taste it. The coffee extracted by the Moka pot is very rich and can extract Crema, which is closest to espresso in taste. You can also mix it with an appropriate amount of water or milk like espresso.
Things to note when using a Moka pot:
1. When filling the lower pot of the Moka pot, special attention must be paid to the fact that the water level cannot exceed the position of the pressure relief valve.
2. Do not touch the body of the Moka pot directly after heating to avoid burns.
3. If the coffee liquid spurts out in an explosive manner, it means that the water temperature is too high. On the contrary, if it flows out too slowly, it means that the water temperature is too low, and you need to increase the fire.
4. Safety: Because of the pressure, you must pay attention to the control of the heat when brewing.
What coffee beans are recommended for a moka pot?
For the pressurized extraction method of the Moka pot, if you want richer coffee crema, use darker roasted coffee. For example, FrontStreet Coffee's Brazilian Queen's Manor Yellow Bourbon Coffee is an outstanding coffee in Brazil. The medium roast used by Front Street highlights the sweetness of its cane sugar without losing the balanced taste of Brazilian beans. Used for making coffee with Moka potrich coffee crema, fragrant peanut almond aroma, chocolate, nuts and cane sugar flavor.

New Pressurized Moka Pot
Bialetti recently released a new generation of pressurized Moka pot. On January 22, you can already see a large number of evaluation videos of the new Moka pot leaked. There are currently three models including new models, namely the ordinary single valve model, the gravity pressurized double valve, and the new pressurized double valve.

The biggest difference in design between the three is: the ordinary single-valve style has no pressurization design, while the old version of the double-valve Moka pot uses a gravity pressurization design. The new model has canceled the gravity pressurization and replaced it with a design with a built-in hydraulic layer for pressurization.
Making such changes will make the use experience easier to clean, and the quality of the brewed coffee will be better. A large number of comparison videos point out that the coffee produced by the single-valve Moka pot has less grease and dissipates quickly. The new and old Moka pots with a pressurized design produce more coffee crema than those brewed with a single valve. The coffee crema brewed by the new version is thicker and denser, and dissipates slower than the old version.
