As we all know! Both hanging ear coffee and Pour over(V60) coffee are made using the drip filter method. The so-called drip filter is a method in which hot water will use gravity to quickly flow through the layer of coffee powder and at the same time bring out the substances in the coffee powder. To put it bluntly, while pouring water into the filter, the coffee will seep out.

Since the extraction methods are the same, everyone will inevitably compare them. But do you know that there is not much comparison between ear-mounted earphones and hand flushers because they pursue different main purposes and have different advantages.

It doesn't matter! Today Front Street will briefly share what is the difference between Pour over(V60) coffee and hanging ear coffee! So first of all, let’s briefly understand what Pour over(V60) coffee is and what is ear-hung coffee.

What is pour-over coffee

The so-called Pour over(V60) coffee refers to a method of brewing coffee by manually controlling the water flow. Various equipment such as filter cups, filter paper, and electronic scales are used to assist in the process. Since the concept of specialty coffee became popular, Pour over(V60) coffee has quickly become popular. Because compared to other coffee extraction methods, it can perfectly display the taste of coffee itself better and more simply.

Not only that, Pour over(V60) coffee also has a very high degree of freedom. We can adjust and replace any parameters and any equipment to combine completely different extraction plans to brew coffee. The final coffee will have slightly different characteristics and is extremely playable! Therefore, hand brewing can become the preferred extraction method for everyone to explore the aroma of coffee.

For Pour over(V60) coffee, we generally buy high-quality single-origin beans. The barista recommends popular styles such as Front Street Oiran, Front Street Blue Mountain No. 1, and Front Street Strawberry Candy. Even a novice who is new to brewing can easily grasp the flavor and taste of coffee.

In addition, another advantage of Pour over(V60) coffee is that a series of actions such as weighing coffee beans, grinding, folding filter paper, moistening the filter cup, pouring powder, boiling water, and brewing usually need to be completed by yourself. The existence of these steps makes the making of this cup of coffee full of ritual.

Since the equipment is relatively affordable, many friends will have a set of professional equipment at home. Whenever they have free time, they will choose a favorite coffee bean to grind and brew.

If you want to try a variety of flavors at once, buy the Front Street classic five-producing area hanging ear coffee. It covers Ethiopia, Kenya, Brazil, Panama, Indonesia and other world-famous coffee-producing countries. From light roasting to dark roasting, from washing to sun-drying, each style has its own flavor and characteristics, and it is worth trying for beginners.

What is hanging ear coffee

The hanging ear can be said to be a derivative of the convenience of Pour over(V60) coffee! At the end of the 20th century, Japan's Ushima Coffee (UCC) first launched the ear-hook bag and applied for a patent in 2001. The ear-hanging bag contains pre-ground coffee powder and an ear-hanging bag made of non-woven fabric. It is the same as Pour over(V60) coffee, using drip extraction. After tearing the packaging bag, take out the ear-hanging bag and hang it up to brew directly, which is very convenient.

图片

The reason why it is named "hanging ear" is because there are two pieces of paper plywood on both sides of the filter bag made of non-woven fabric. As demonstrated in the picture above, after opening, it can be hung on a narrow-mouthed cup to serve as a filter cup for brewing coffee. Therefore, the name of ear-hanging coffee comes from these two pieces of paper hanging on the rim of the cup like "ears".

Compared with Pour over(V60) coffee, hanging coffee is very convenient because it does not require grinding coffee powder, nor does it need to prepare various equipment such as filter cups and filter papers. It only requires a container and a water-filling kettle to complete the making of hanging coffee. Coupled with its small size, the ear-hook bag is very convenient to carry, so it has become a common item for people to have when traveling and working in daily life.

What is the difference between hanging coffee and Pour over(V60) coffee?

From the above brief introduction, we can know that the biggest difference between ear-mounted and manual brewing is actually the state of the coffee powder used. The coffee powder used for Pour over(V60) coffee is mainly freshly ground, which means that the coffee beans are ground into powder before brewing; while the coffee powder used for hanging ear cups is pre-ground, that is, it is ground early and then sealed into the ear hanging bag. And it is this difference that makes the essence of the two completely different. Why? Because the taste of brewed coffee will change accordingly.

图片

As we all know, the flavor of coffee mainly comes from the aroma substances of coffee, and most of these aroma substances are volatile. After the coffee beans are roasted, the aroma of the coffee will continue to evaporate and lose from the inside to the outside like carbon dioxide. The speed of loss mainly depends on the storage method, environment, and whether the structure of the coffee itself is intact.

When the storage environment and method of coffee beans are appropriate and the structure of the coffee beans themselves is relatively complete, the volatilization rate of aroma substances will be slowed down. Generally speaking, if the above conditions are met, the aroma substances of coffee beans can be stored for up to 2 months (from the roasting date); but when the storage environment and method of coffee beans are relatively poor, or the coffee beans are ground into powder, the aroma substances will be lost faster, and the appreciation period will be reduced from the original two months to one month or even less than one month.

图片

So this leads to the fact that even if the beans are the same and have the same roasting date, the flavor brewed from the ear-hanging bag will not be as rich as Pour over(V60) coffee. Because it uses pre-ground coffee powder, the coffee flavor evaporates faster than freshly ground coffee, and this gap increases as the grinding time increases.

At the same time, because the coffee powder is pre-ground, its grinding degree is already fixed, and the brewing frame cannot be adjusted too much. This will make the hanging ear coffee not as wide as Pour over(V60) coffee, and the playability is lower.

However, what we need to know is that the advantage of hanging ear coffee has never been flavor, but simplicity and convenience. Just because it needs to be more convenient, the ear-mounted bag has pre-ground coffee powder. Otherwise, we can also use the ear-mounted bag to brew freshly ground coffee, which can also obtain excellent coffee flavor.

Therefore, we can know that although Pour over(V60) coffee and hanging coffee use the same drip brewing method, they pursue completely different purposes. Hand-brewed coffee pursues a more complete and higher-quality coffee experience, so the main object of its brewing is freshly ground coffee powder; while hanging ear coffee pursues convenience, so it sacrifices some coffee flavor in exchange for convenience. Both have their own advantages and their own applicable scenarios, so there is no need to compare~
