In today's materially rich world, the pursuit of refinement is the ideal of everyone's serious life. When you go out to a cafe, it's actually very easy to drink a cup of black coffee. You just need to stand in front of the cashier and say "I want a cup of XX coffee." Then, it was time for the barista to perform, preparing coffee beans, filter cups, filter paper, sharing pots, and hot water. After a whole set of processes, the exquisite coffee flavor is fully revealed with the wonderful brewing skills.

However, a series of tools can be overwhelming when used and take up space when not in use. Isn’t there any convenient tool that can help coffee lovers drink a cup of exquisite coffee? When this problem is presented to the Front Street barista, the Front Street barista will immediately pull out the dusty French press.

The history of the French press

French Press, also known as French Press. This coffee brewing tool is highly praised among workers for its simplicity and convenience. The earliest written records of the French press can be traced back to the 1950s. Two Frenchmen submitted a patent document related to the French press: a metal can is connected to a movable rod. There is a hole at the bottom of the rod, and a layer of flannel is sandwiched above and below. When the lever is pressed to the bottom of the metal can, the coffee grounds will be isolated at the bottom of the container, resulting in a cleaner cup of coffee.

Due to the design flaws of the above-mentioned French press, the container cannot be sealed, which has also prompted other designers to improve their technology and develop a new design version of the French press.

In 1929, a company from Milan, Italy went to the United States to register a modified version of the French Press, and the prototype of the modern French Press appeared.

How the French Press works

The French press is a coffee brewing appliance composed of a glass body and a metal filter with a pressing rod. When using a French press to brew coffee, pour the coffee powder into the pot and add hot water to soak it completely. Then use the pressure bar with a metal filter to separate the coffee liquid and coffee grounds.

Front Street observed the metal filter of the French press and found that the gap between the filters was larger. Compared with the filter paper, some fine coffee powder could easily pass through the metal filter. Moreover, before the coffee liquid is poured out, the liquid is soaked in the coffee powder, so the soaked coffee liquid tastes more mellow and retains more texture and oil of the coffee.

Precautions for using French press pot

No matter how the barista brews it, the coffee will always taste good. But when I brew it at home, I still can't get the exquisite taste that I get when I drink it in a restaurant. Compared with the extremely technical and difficult water injection brewing, friends have turned their attention to the simplest coffee brewing method, which is to brew coffee with a French press.

Since you want a cup of coffee with exquisite taste, even a French press that requires as much care as a mother is very particular about it, and there are still certain restrictions on grinding degree, water temperature and other factors.

[Grinding degree]

Baristas at the Front Street store often receive questions like this: What is the correct scale for grinding? The Front Street store uses an EK43s grinder, while some friends may use a Commander C40 hand grinder. With different equipment, different types of equipment cutterheads, and different maintenance statuses, even if the scale is the same, the thickness of the ground coffee powder will be different.

Therefore, when Front Street recommends the degree of grinding, it generally uses the Chinese standard No. 20 screen pass rate. Front Street Coffee recommends a screening rate of 80% for medium-light roasted coffee beans and 75% for medium-dark roasted coffee beans. Due to different equipment, the specific flavor needs to be determined after sifting and brewing, and then further adjustments can be made.

【Water temperature】

As the temperature rises, the material exchange rate increases more obviously. When Front Street brews different coffee beans, it will adjust the water temperature according to the coffee beans with different roasting degrees.

The lighter the degree of roasting of the coffee beans, the firmer the internal structure of the coffee beans. Flavor compounds precipitate at a slower rate when in contact with water. In order to extract more delicate floral aroma and high-quality fruit sourness and sweetness from lightly roasted coffee beans, high-temperature hot water of 90 degrees Celsius to 92 degrees Celsius is generally used.

When the coffee beans are roasted more deeply, the volume of the cooked coffee beans expands and their internal structure becomes looser. After grinding into granular form, it has higher water absorption efficiency and faster flavor dissolution rate. The increase in water temperature will accelerate the precipitation of more flavor substances with larger molecular weight, which will easily produce a bitter and burnt taste. Therefore, Front Street generally uses hot water between 86 degrees Celsius and 88 degrees Celsius when brewing medium-dark roasted coffee beans.

Notice! ! About choosing coffee beans for French press

French press coffee is an immersion extraction, just like making tea, so it is best to choose coffee beans that can highlight the unique taste: If you want a cup of coffee with a mellow taste and not sour, buy Front Street PWN Golden Mandheling; if you like a sweet taste, your first choice is Front Street Strawberry Candy and Front Street Blackberry, which are processed with honey to enhance the flavor of tropical fruits; finally, if you want coffee that is not bitter, buy Front Street Oiran or Front Street Fruit Ding Ding, both of which have floral aromas and the sour and sweet flavors of citrus and berries.
